A few days of almost non-stop rain. Not a big deal like other places, no floods or anything, just muddy and wet. On morning tour of the garden found one of the fish...the sort that can slither/jump around out of the water. Then a couple more, and another. About 15 cm long, bony barbs on back. The dog was very excited about these, being previously a city dog maybe not familiar with them. Proceeded to chase them around, and hunted one (that I know of), looked very proud munching on it.

Other than the bones, is there any serious danger/harm there? Toxic somehow? Carrying parasites/worms?

Probably snakeheads aka pla chon, they tend to walkabout at night in the rain looking for new ponds. If you can nab a few you can sell for about 60 baht a kilo, bony but tasty.

Ah, that would explain what she's chasing in the tall grass these last few nights. Was worried it was a snake or large monitor (although surly, they'll come after these fish too...?). So far she seems to have no problems with their 'thorns', so guess we can skip this week's bone run.

The "thorns" sound like a Clarias, or walking catfish. Big clariids are food fish in SEA and Africa, but ornamental elsewhere.

Thanks, but no, these aren't catfish nor snakeheads.
