He is probably spot on there.

9 billion baht is a lot of money and it makes a huge house which isn't needed if it was only to be used for consular matters.

I guess a number of 3-letter organizations will also take office there together with their sophisticated electronic equipment.

The US Consulate was always a lovely place back in the 70.s - no need to change it.  The other 3-letter organisations had rented office space elasewhere in Chiang Mai. The Vice Consuls also lived in rented houses off campus.   Perhaps the US  wants to have a big compound with all staff and affliated organisations in one place

Am I to believe Thailand does not want to help America keep an eyes(ears) on China? Thailand wants lopsided trade benefits from the USA but turns their back when America needs assistance to track Communist. It beggars belief.

Like bugs in the concrete?  Like spies roaming the streets of Chiang Mai. Really the Thai paranoia is laughable. Thailand is of little importance to the rest of the world.  No body's interested in how many obsolete subs are purchased; how many armoured cars imported for use on the civilian population.

I was nearly arrested for having a camera near a rusting hulk in Sattahip; there are some beaches where farangs are not allowed in case they see and report any startling new weaponry.

AND there's no need for so many grubbing generals; if there was ever a war with say Laos or Cambodia, the Thais would roll over - again.
