Buddhist authorities investigate 100 million baht ordination ceremony in Yala

Thailand's Buddhist Religious Affairs office and Yala officials are investigating after a lavish ordination ceremony was held at a temple in the southern Thai province.

 

Theerachai Khonghong who goes by the name of GGPeepo (sic) is a popular owner of an online gold shop. He spent 100 million baht on his ordination into the monkhood. 

 

A billboard advertising the three day event showed well known entertainers and fancy costumes.

 

Criticism had flowed in on social media prompting the authorities to act.

 

Sanook reported that permission had mostly been sought and granted for the extravaganza but the authorities were investigating all aspects.

 

They planned to speak to Theerachai after the social media uproar. 

 

Thaivisa notes that ordinations are often glitzy affairs but the scale of this one and its enormous budget has prompted people to question the "appropriateness" of it all.

As long as....

he can melt most of his gold down again after the party, he hasn’t spent too much on the fun...

if I had a gold shop, I’d do something similar,

only I wouldn’t aspire to become a boring cleric,

but someone like Julius Caesar or Mark Anthony, being carried by slaves through town on a sedan bed, sucking grapes and Dom Perignong!  Naked girls fanning me and throwing lollies into the crowd, if you get my drift!
