Steel industry protected by anti-dumping duty for another 5 years

A trade panel headed by Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit on Tuesday approved maintaining the anti-dumping duty on imported cold-rolled steel.

 

Kirati Ratchano, director-general of the Foreign Trade Department, said the duty had been collected from importers of steel for the past five years to deal with dumping in the market.

 

However, after noting that the price of steel in Thailand was cheaper than in foreign countries, the anti-dumping panel decided to impose the duty for another five years.

 

The department will also hold a public hearing with steel-dependent businesses and importers to gauge opinions on extending the duty.

 

Kirati said that Thailand currently collects a duty of 50.92 per cent of CFI (cost, insurance, and freight) of rolled steel imports from Japan. The rate is 50.99 per cent for South Korean steel and 0 to 33.99 per cent for Taiwanese steel.

Somebody let the clowns loose in the commerce department.  Your steel is competitive, but you still levy a 50% duty?????????   Thaivisa should run circus music in the background for all junta related articles.
