Government to tighten crackdown on vehicles causing pollution

The government is planning to tighten vehicle inspection to deal with air pollution, the top official at the Pollution Control Department said.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will intensify measures to deal with polluters, Attapol Charoenchansa, the department's director-general said.

He said 17 units would be set up in Bangkok for more stringent inspection of vehicles to find those emitting black smoke.

Between October 2019 and September 2020, 7,010 out of 9,539 inspected vehicles emitted excess black smoke and 2,526 were fined.

The aim is to lessen the level of PM2.5 dust particles (particles less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter) in the big city as diesel engine combustion releases too much pollution, he said.

According to the Land Transport Act, owners of cars that emit smoke would be suspended from driving the vehicles until the cars were fixed, Attapol said.

got to be seen to be doing something. I'm waiting to hear about a "committee set up to tackle the PM2.5 problem".

How gonna get fixed carry it. ????

Start with city buses and tuned up or ancient pickup trucks belching out smoke. That's probably 90% immediately (in my estimation from what I've witnessed). Rare to see cars in the city belching smoke.

Another crack down....another failure in the making.

One day, someone amongst the government, will wake up that the cops are useless...and lazy. If there's no money in it, there's no action!

Won't be any problem  at all find polluting vehicles.

The program has already been in place for years...the government chose not to enforce it....pretty much mirror the northern air pollution response....

nothing improves as it is much easier to do nothing and the cone out periodically verbalizing crackdowns...

the Thai public is either stupid or numb to it all....

They just need to outsource this out to private enterprise, along with enforcement of all traffic laws (actually holding a licence to drive, wearing helmets, only two on a bike, illegal sidecars with propane gas cylinders, speeding, going the wrong way on roads, driving on the pavement, illegal exhaust systems, etc).  The enforcement company gets 75% of the fines imposed, and the government gets 25% (for being lazy).

Does anyone know where all the new city buses are now? Are they still parked up in Malaysia or somewhere?

I read between the lines, we are talking about shortage of braincells.

Never ever.

Planning and doing, are two different things.

Of course, they should, but nothing will happen.

As same crackdown on motorcycle on the sidewalk.

I reported with evidence pictures over 200,.... Never received one single Baht of the promised reward.

Finally, someone who knows what they’re talking about.  I live a stone’s throw away from the Emporium.  You can clearly see the busses and construction vehicles pouring out billows of dark toxic smoke and gases.  REMOVE THEM OFF THE STREETS AND RETIRE THEM PERMANENTLY.  Put the new buses into operation instead of the limited few.  Remove the old dump trucks and get them off the streets.

Unless a car is 20+ years old, it’s not a polluter of any significance.  Most new cars (last 10 years) use a computer to control air/fuel mix and not manual Carburetors.  The air in Bangkok has never looked cleaner.  Lets keep it that way.   STOP giving out fines.  Just haul them off to the scrapyard where they belong.  START WITH ALL THE OLD BUSES (It’s the red ones... ???? just in case you weren’t sure).

Whenever you see words like "intensify", "stringent", and "strictly", you know the announcement is just for show and that nothing is going to happen after a 2-3 day photo opportunity.

It's usually Diesel engines that didn't get serviced. To have the nozzles and the Diesel pump overhauled is quite expensive, and many people can't afford that.

The government could start a campaign and subsidize those who go clean.

But that would only be possible with people who know what they are doing.

That will good it would take around 60% of the vehicles off the roads but i bet nothing will be done just another bit of news that will fade away

Yeah okay we believe you.

I got my laugh for the day anyway.

Sorry guys, looks like no salary increase next year but this should help

And noise pollution takes a back seat. Fed up with all those loud speaker trucks up and down my, what would normally be, peaceful Soi.

How about fields creating pollution?

I'm sure this will be as successful as enforcing the use of taxi meters; enforcing the rule that taxis must accept all fares; stopping the riding of motor cycles on pavements and ensuring all riding motor cycles wear crash helmets, and are licensed.

Bravo!

You guys are all just a bunch of whiners! - I have no idea what you are complaining about.  The wife and I are enjoying our holiday in Thailand this November and the rampant pollution doesnt affect us at all.  Lovely holiday picture below.

Modern vehicles today rarely smoke if maintained, filters etc, but the boy racer pick ups are hacked about to produce smoke, its a look at me thing more smoke more important.

On inspection take them off the road with a 14 day prohibition notice if that isnt taken serious crush them, it can be classed as a self inflicted wound.

Commercial vehicles falling foul renders the vehicle not serviceable and an immediate prohibition notice.

Get serious or get out of the way and let another dept take over or even better a private company paid on results.
