I am thinking of buying a new TV, either plasma or LCD. The question is, which one is better?

I would have said LCD because when I go to the mall, modern LCDs with contrast ratio of 8000:1 look better than plasmas, also use less energy and don't burn in. But then, they all show HD content.

Here's the thing - a friend of mine had a new LCD TV - DVDs looked fine on it, but regular TV was crap, pixelated all over, a complete joke. He returned it after a few weeks. Now he has a plasma and regular TV looks just fine - it looks just like it would look on a pretty large pretty good screen. It's a brilliant picture in fact. I know standard TV is low resolution but the fact is that TV in this country will not be HD any time soon so the TV will run in "low res" mode over 50% of the time.

Are there LCD TVs that are better at scaling the picture? Or are plasmas just better at that?

Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

SD Plasmas do look better with UBC etc... Why not buy a plasma 42" TV for now (they are 39k) and upgrade in a couple of years time when the TV signals are better and move the plasma to the bedroom.

Saw a really nice 42" Samsung plasma for 35k yesterday at Robinson. The prices for these things are dropping like crazy.

They also had a brand new 32" LCD from Samsung which looked excellent with 7000:1 contrast for 29k. The plasma has 10,000:1 contrast ratio but lower resolution. LG also has new LCDs with 8000:1 contrast for 26k but then again I have had too many problems with LG products in the past to consider them. Compare that to older LCDs with 1000:1 - these make the others look downright bad in the store.

I am tending towards the LCDs now because they are more future proof and 32" is enough for the bedroom.

Pioneer and Panasonic for Plasmas.

Sony and Sharp for LCDs.

The AV forums consider this the top choices in the competing technology.

LCDs have less glare and make better computer monitors for gaming etc.

The contrast is not as good as the Plasma though.

In a dark room, Plasma wins out.

The prices are falling. The 40" Sony LCD was 149,000 a year ago, now on sale 69,000.

I bought a Samsung 42" plasma for the living room it has a higher colour defination. Basically when I was considering Plasma or LCD I was told if below 36" buy LCD (dont know if this true?) Since then I have also bought a 32" LCD for the bedroom sole purpose for playing DVD's.

Go for a plasma as Ben said wait a couple of years then buy a LCD, Plasma is more for your money

I have a 42" Panasonic plama for over a year now and it has a VGA input. I have been quite happy with it. When connected to my media center PC, the quality is excellent. With UBC, the quality is not great but this is due to UBC mpeg high compression and the artifacts show up in dark scenes (moire patterns). Also, the Panasonic has various modes to allow a 4:3 to display on a 16:9 screen reasonably well.
