Looking for some help from those in the know here guys !

I have a bar which has TVs and DVD and music etc. Now the DVD player has packed up and conventional wisdom would dictate that I replace it. However, we have a friend who gives us German sports shows on DVD each week, which he gets from the internet via subscription.

Extrapolate this idea and what I’m getting at is whether we can get a half decent PC, which when connected to ADSL, can download this channel and loads more which we could play direct to the TV. We could also use regular pre recorded DVDs in the PC. We could also presumably get movies and the like downloaded and burned to DVD etc.

So how do we do it ? I can go and buy a PC but will it play to TV etc. Does it need a special “TV out” type chip etc. ? this is where I hope you guys can help.

Of course we can just replace the DVD player but I would rather we went for something which could do much, much more as long as the price is not too high.

So if anyone knows anything about this or what I think I have described, can you please help. Beers in appreciation as always.

PS, what about getting the stuff off the net and burning it – bit of a dummy me !

Forget the idea. Any video that is being streamed on the internet is low resolution and would not look very good on large screens.

Your friend is most likely downloading files that have higher resolution and thus large files sizes. After downloading complete files he probably watches them then burns to DVD. This method produces good quality video to play out.

Thats what I was thinking about, not playing them direct, but downloading them to harddrive and burning. Just how to do it and whether the PC DVD drive can be set up to play to the big TV OK ?

Hi Torrenova,

You just need a pretty standard PC, with just two extra's.

1) a video card (VGA card) with a TV out plug. normally this plug is from the composite type (yellow colored jack) or S-video type (small 5 pin plug, similar to that of a keyboard). The normal "on-board video" most cheap pc's come with does not allow you to hook up a TV!

2) A big hard disk. Video can eat up tremendous amounts of hard disk space!

Once you are used to having everything on PC, you'll never want to turn back to the old days of dvd's/cd's...

You have instant access to your complete collection, wetter it's video, music video or just music.

Everything you currently own on DVD or CD can be pretty easily be transferred onto your hard disk.

PM me for more details if you need some help!

Cheers,

Monty

Agreed. :o After burning many DVDs from video files and each taking some hours to complete, I decided to just build an inexpensive media center PC. Haven't looked back since. Everything archived on an external USB drive (500GB) and quick to select either a movie to watch or a song to play. Many cards have video out now and not necessary to have a high end card to do it. The one I bought was under 2000 baht and plays the videos fine.

Depending on which type of TV are you using. If you have an HD/Plasma or a modern CRT then they should have PC connector. If not than a normal video card would help with TV output, like mine nVidia 7300GS is ok for THB2,400 or a small device which can help you to run any video card output from PC to TV for around THB2,000. If you have a modern TV than you can help separate views on your monitor and PC. :o

Of course we can just replace the DVD player but I would rather we went for something which could do much, much more as long as the price is not too high.

I suggest to buy a cheap DVD player for around THB1,000 to make it handy if PC breaks down. :D

When should I come for beer? :D

Additionally, I suggest a decent PC for around THB20,000 with the following specification could easily do the job.

1x Pentium 4/Core Duo etc. processor

1x A decent motherboard with PCI-X and on board graphic card

1x 1GB RAM

1x 320GB Internal drive

1x 320GB external drive with external case

1x DVD burner

1x DVD ROM

1x a decent CRT monitor

1x A decent casing

1x UPS

Thats what I could suggest you. :D

Careful, I got done 15,000 baht for streaming from the PC, the guesthouse across the road was done 80,000 and bar next door done 60,000 (We had a friendly policeman who negotiated the fine (robbery) down for us.

Make sure you have all the correct licenses. Especially the one from MCT - Onestop.

Regards

Chris

I'm pretty sure you meant to say PCI-E (PCI-Express). PCI-X (Extended) was designed for servers and graphics cards (PCI-X) not easy to find. PCI-X will plug into a standard PCI slot if it supports the proper voltage.

Lor, did you have Thai music on the system, or only foreign tunes?

This would be the first I heard of somebody getting fined re foreign music...
