Bangkok, 04 December, 2020 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to announce that Thailand was named the number one Asian destination, and the fourth destination worldwide, according to a recent survey by German-based online travel agent Tourlane.

In a survey to identify travel trends that are emerging for 2021, it found that Thailand was the fourth most popular worldwide destination named by respondents, after the USA, South Africa, and Canada.

Ms. Helen Scheepers, Head of Sales at Tourlane, said: “The survey shows that 2021 will be a year of the great outdoors, so it’s no surprise to see that Thailand, with its incredible range of outdoor activities, is the fourth most popular worldwide destination for 2021. With so many participants rating travel as a top priority for 2021, we’re excited about a potential boom in travel to countries like Thailand that’s on the horizon.”

Over 1,200 travellers aged between 18 and 65 were surveyed in the October 2020 online poll, which indicated that while most participants would not be traveling again in 2020, the majority did plan to travel in 2021 as one of their top priorities for the year.

Key findings showed that more than two thirds (69%) of international travellers preferred a destination that offered plenty in the way of outdoor activities, and that over half (54%) of the travellers wanted to travel for two or three weeks during the spring or summer time.

Clear safety guidelines and hygiene standards was also mentioned as a priority by 43% of the respondents along with good health facilities (37%).

Thailand continues to be ranked one of the top countries among 180 countries worldwide for its ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) recovery efforts according to the Global COVID-19 Index (GCI).

Oh magic crystal ball what can we expect for tourism next year? Crystal ball responds "I am pleased to announce that Thailand was named the number one Asian destination, and the fourth destination worldwide when people asked their magic mirrors where they could travel with a guaranteed quarantine"

Another daily buildup.  What will happen when all of their dreams and wishes do not come true.  TAT will start to look like Pinocchio soon I fear.

I presume  no one has told them about the likely entry requirements.  Don't you just love those t's + c's in 4 point print.

Better dust off those dual pricing signs. Thailand is back!   Though after this world wide downturn, anywhere is better than where you live.   Sounds like a lot of dreaming to me.  People have to rebuild their lives.   And Thailand will have stiff competition from neighboring countries.  Backpackers are going to be welcomed back to Vietnam and Cambodia, Thailand? Who knows.  Like many have said: who wants to travel with all the stipulations in place now?

Trending Destinations for 2021

From Australia to Argentina, we gave American travelers a choice of destinations from across the world, and asked them to choose their top picks for 2021. While Europe was negatively impacted by Coronavirus in 2020, American travelers are undeterred.  The survey reveals that four of the top five trending destinations for 2021 are European. Italy ranks first, narrowly ahead of France, Portugal, and Spain.

There's not going to be any holidays in 2021.

Vaccinations with foreign produced vaccines won't begin until May, I can't see them opening it up after vaccinating the over 50's.

I've got a feeling this will drag on for years. The days of mass tourism are gone for a while, at least for a few years.

Australia will start AZ vaccinations in March at least that's the plan. The issue facing countries after they start vaccinating people is how to certify the process using a method that can't be forged or falsified. The days of using a vaccination book with a stamp  are over and just not good enough any more. Solving one problem just leads to another more often than not.

That's the site the TAT quoted from. There is no mention of Thailand being number 4 on the list only number 6 worldwide.

No one will come after the debacle this week which shows Thailand cannot control their borders.

I am thinking that they may open as soon as the elites get vaccinated. They will have access to the first shipments but the question is will they trust it or will they hold off and allow the masses to be used as guinea pigs before they get vaccinated. Once their safety is taken care of their pockets will become the priority.

Yeah well, you might want to give your Embassy's around the world a heads up.

There is only one open in all of Australia and they can't even pick up a phone, reply to an email, track your visa is off-line and its phone mail boxes are full continuously.

A lot of negative comments as usual.

Thailand will bounce back faster than most. I cant see many risking their families health to go to covid ravaged Europe or the USA.

Personally i know one retired couple that will come and stay in five star resorts for 3-4 months like they do every year.
I have 6-7 friends who will bring their families over, 4 star types.

And 4 “single” mates, two of who usually come 3-5 times per year,  1200ish per night room types.

All can’t wait to get over here again.

If the vaccine is in Thailand by May as planned it will be back to business as usual by November high season.

Light at the end of the tunnel now.

Good one!????

man that airport pic looks like a hospital.....boost the economy by offering 200 bt prostate exams upon arrival

One German-based survey doesn't mean anything. It has to be global with lots more countries participating

Thailand is famed world-wide for its indoor activities.

Thailand is the 2nd most dangerous roads in the world.

We need the 14 day quarantine for a while, I did it and it sh*ts. Even in a 4* hotel. But not until land boards are secured will mass tourism return. The overly cautious airport security is a paper tiger. With what seems to be an in controlled situation in the north I am told " do not go north" . Same same as Rayong a while back. over reaction. Thai paranoia.

????????????????????

One of my relatives works for a large well known international travel company, one of the biggest.  He says this report is nonsense and he is in a position to know. When I asked him where is, he said, for Asia, Singapore, India, Vietnam and Taiwan, elsewhere,  all Caribbean destinations and most people in Europe will stay in and around Europe for at least a couple of holiday years, with New Zealand the likely long haul favourite.  Thailand appears nowhere in their research on future travel plans.

Edited by Pilotman

The respondents plan to holiday for 2-3 weeks

if 2 weeks they will have to go home after 2 week quarantine

the lucky ones will get 1 week in the greatest destination

in the world.  These people just don’t get it.  Have any of them

traveled to a first world country

Thailand could be me 1 again when they skip quarantine. However. I don't think this will happen soon as Thai health system cannot cope with massive Covid numbers. For now just a happy few I'll come and undergo quarantine voluntarily.

And another positive comment.... from someone else with a vested interest. At least we get a bit of balance on here, and nothing wrong with a bit of optimism.

Many on the forum can't see families risking anything, including 15 days of quarantine, when infected people can just wander across the border.

I was planning many things in 2021 but frankly that horizon has gone and its planning a week at a time for the foreseeable future. I doubt anyone can plan anything in these times regarding travel.

I don't see why anyone who was vaccinated would have any concerns (and probably inly those who are vaccinated will be allowed in to Thailand so it all becomes moot).

In 2019 Thailand was #9.  I would think China will fall below Thailand since lots of people will no longer go their with their horrible government and travel warnings being issued by many countries about going there.  Same thing for Turkey.  Then again, lots of bad publicity out of Thailand this year.
