Kampong Chhnang provincial authorities yesterday announced that the police crackdown temporarily closed a total of 517 rice wine producers and 1,115 rice wine sellers from November 28 to December 12. Brigadier General Ea Bunthoeun, deputy police chief, said that police began the crackdown after eight people died from drinking rice wine in Toek Phos district recently.

He said they detained 10 people. Six of them were sent to court and charged with “manslaughter” under Articles 18 and 63 of the Law on Quality Management, Capacity of Products, Goods and Services and Article 207 of the Criminal Code. They face between one and three years in prison and a fine of  between $500 and $1,500.

He said they confiscated 3,895 litres of wine in 532 containers. He said that after the operation to confiscate the wine, experts found the methanol content was high at 14.15 percent, which is only allowed to be 5.1 percent. As a result, 131 local drinkers were poisoned, including the eight people who died.
