Migrant workers not allowed to move out of high-risk areas

The Labour Ministry has issued orders prohibiting migrant workers from leaving high-risk areas as of Sunday in a bid to control the second wave of Covid-19 infections.

Those who violate this order will be charged for violating the Communicable Disease Act and emergency decree.

The ministry has also ordered employers to screen all migrant workers and ensure all protection measures like social distancing, temperature checking and provision of hand sanitising gel are observed.

Employers are also required to inform public health personnel immediately in case any employee shows symptoms of the virus.

The agenda has been enforced.  Next they will be inspecting all migrant workers documents.  Have to lay the blame somewhere. What a farce, why not make it that no one on those Areas can move around until checked, even Thais.  Xenophobia at work.

Am I a migrant worker ?

They should make them wear a tag, so everybody knows who to avoid, maybe some kind of star would be suitable.

No, we're ATMs, something completely different.

As we've seen in the past few weeks, not being allowed to do something and not actually doing it are two completely different things.

More racism... it just never stops in Thailand does it? What next?

The tendency for Thai’s to revert to ‘blaming someone else’ is outrageous - this underlying mindset is somewhat disgusting.

Yes... Migrant workers may have brought in Covid-19 from other countries, but who let them do that?

There are clear ‘illegal immigration routes’ that every migrant worker knows - They are set up by Thai’s.

Migrant workers pay money for passage into Thailand.

Up until last month the ‘going rate’ (at the time of Covid-19) was 12,000 baht per worker to re-enter Thailand and get ‘safe transit’ all the way to Bangkok.

Who provides the jobs for all these migrant workers. Who allows a system where poor migrant workers come here to work their socks off, usually under tough conditions, without any labour / workers rights whatsoever.

This system suits Thailand, it needs its 'financially disparate migrant labour force' but treats them terribly - they are Thailands ‘untouchables’ and many get treated terribly.

Couldn't agree more Richard!

This excellent article of Voranai Vanijaka sums up this Thai mindset quite well:

It's not Thai bashing. It's written by a Thai academic.

A good summary of what I call the 'discourage and deter' methodology

We went old-school, Thai-style bureaucracy by making things as difficult and tedious as possible, not to mention costly, especially for migrant workers

Are you from Myanmar, Cambodia or Laos and hold a L-A visa?

Disgusting.......so potentially infected Thais can move around freely...... spreading covid to Bangkok, Korat?

What a ludicrous situation.

Madness. Things are just getting started.
