Thai PM assures no national lockdown despite a surge in COVID-19 cases

prayut-nonthaburi.jpg

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has reassured that the Thai government will not resort to a lockdown of the entire country in the wake of the surge in COVID-19 infections, noting that provincial governors are authorized to make decisions about necessary measures in their provinces to stem the spread of the contagion.

He also urged members of the public to write to him if they have information about illegal gambling dens in their localities, so that he can take action to deal with the problem.

Most of the COVID-19 cases in the eastern province of Rayong are related to illegal gambling activities. The prime minister was in Chon Buri province today to offer moral support to health officials and volunteers working at state quarantine and alternative state quarantine facilities.

He still doesn't understand his own people does he.  He expects the independent provinces to control the masses without a government mandating strict control itself.  He has definitely lost the plot.

Oh! come on - what this guy is saying is that his policing infrastructure is not fit for purpose. Whatever happened to agressive law enforcement. Seems that he is saying that he relies on informants,

I don't want lockdowns either but what choice is there when all travel is still allowed and assisting the virus to spread.  No win situation i guess.

I agree. Other Asians are capable in this regard, able to successfully coordinate large scale initiatives. Even China, as much as I hate that country, is able to do this.

Thailand however is more like a loose system of feudal fiefdoms. Without being forced by the national government, they have no chance at success.

Your 'assurance' means nothing to us any longer sir, you have failed your job to keep Thailand safe and clean of Covid and the less you 'assure' people the better...

"moral support". How many were happy to see Prayut in Pattaya yesterday? Probably happy when he left. Even happier if he resigns.

He doesn't want to be seen as the bad guy. In the end he'll probably have to or he'll tell the gov's to do it and stay at arms lentgh. As it stands covid is now in most provinces with several on lockdown already and allowing travel over this period you would imagine will exacerbate the problem leading to more provincial lockdowns.

Thailand accepts any chance of tourism or revenue from tourism is already blown for the year so, that is of no concern or an issue to them.

He announced a complete lockdown in March time when they were controlling the virus adequately and people felt a national lockdown was not necessary.

Why now when the cases are rising in many areas and from multiple sources allegedly, gambling dens, Burmese fishermen, seafood markets, etc does he not now impose a national lockdown?

No reason not to announce a lockdown as people on the move back to their home provinces for New Year will spread Covid19, to every province in the country, especially with the new strain, which no doubt is already in the country?

Bizarre! Absolutely unfathomable!

We believe you General Prayut.  And the election will be held next month?  And the government is fighting corruption with all its might?

Who else could he blame when it all goes wrong

He also said there wouldn't be a coup.

So there's that.

perhaps the PM has not been told about the new deadly strain spreading the country, if I had not read it here I would not know also, by the way gambling dens are not new they have been operating long before the virus came along, got to be careful what you say now that the scientists have taken over, they  have  warned not to call this thing the flue any more, am I glad that none of my relations or friends have caught it so far

As local governors seem oblivious as to what goes on and police take an incentive to look the other way !

Exactly while individual provincial governors can do what is necessary only the government can stop inter provincial travel... he encourages "lets go halves" and share the love?

They might have to build a bigger "inactive building" to house them all.

This sounds slightly less healthy than contracting COVID-19.

Honestly, everyone knows where the local casino is. Inspector Clouseau could find them.

If the surges keep going will the new holidays stay in place or will they be removed ?

On one hand it makes sense to lock travel in and out of provinces that are either safe or dangerous, to keep infections from spreading, rather than slamming this over entire country. That said, by mid-January, there won't be any green provinces anymore, thanks to mass migrations happening right now, and closing provinces won't make any sense anyway. At that time, I'm quite confident, movements will get dramatically restricted all over the country, and lockdowns, likely curfews introduced as well.
