Daily News published a series of charts depicting figures supplied by the head of the Probation Department. They apparently plan to update them over the "seven deadly days" on the Thai roads at New Year.

Chart: Daily News

Initial stats showed that 42 drunk drivers were caught on the first day. Last year 567 were caught. This, the media said, represented a decrease of more than 92%.

Thaivisa notes that the media made no attempt to explain this or put it into context.

Those driving with drugs in their system were also well down - 50 cases from 121. None were caught speeding and six were driving negligently.

The worst province for offenders was Samut Prakan with 11 cases, followed by Chaiyaphum, Korat and Roi-Et with four each then Nonthaburi and Bangkok with three each.

A third chart gave the figures as a percentage of the whole.

The Probation Department has deployed 477 personnel in 32 checkpoints nationwide.

It should be noted that these statistics only represent their actions at New Year and might not be representative of the true picture.

Well if you do not test like you said then yes the numbers are down, but then the accidents started with a bang as well as 43 deaths on the first day of 7 deadly days as they call them.  Bangkok is very quiet this morning in the Sathon Area.  Not many on the roads.

Covid measures already saving lives.

OF COURSE the numbers are down! Just last week they actually announced that they would reduce the roadside breath tests, by something similar to 92%!!  ????????????

Of Course they are down! Only last week it was reported here on Thai Visa that the police announced that they were not going to do roadside testing due to concerns about Covid -19!!

"Thai police will reduce the amount of alcohol breath tests performed at roadside checkpoints during the New Year holidays.

Speaking on Friday, national police chief Suwat Jangyodsuk said the measure was necessary in order to help prevent the spread of coronavirus."

But they spread the virus anyways by allowing all of the inter-provincial travel and travel all over Thailand for the holidays.  What a CF

Maybe they are using Covid-19 test kits instead of breath alcohol tests?

Maybe not so strange after all. A friend just messaged me another friend told him that police here in central Pattaya are stopping people for Covid-19 tests. I don't have more info than that.

"..... the measure was.... to help prevent the spread..... "

That works, reducing the population reduces the number available to spread spread it.

Wait a minute.... wasn't there a RTP ordinance issued just last week that advised police nationwide NOT to conduct alcohol tests at checkpoints?

So why are the media so elated that figures are down 92% y-o-y?

Don't ask silly questions, do you expect the media to have enough intelligence to answer such a difficult question?

let us wait a few days to see the new year death rate

Misleading headline - surely the New Year does not kick off until midnight TONIGHT??

Is that from Covid  or DuI

Of course it is down , there are no frigging cars on the road .Chiang is very quite for this time of the year . Of course the government will be saying they were successful in the program  .Last week they were saying the virus was not bad here because the Thai people wash theirs hands all the time as they are use to eating with their fingers and they are use to wearing masks because of the  burning season.I go to the toilet and one in 5 wash their hands. Don't you just get tired of it

Your friend sounds like a plum to me.

Exactly, same as the covid testing, the more you test the more you find,, or in this case,  don't test and you won't find.

Amazing what figures you can attain when you don't test.
