webfact Posted January 5, 2021 Share Posted January 5, 2021 Power of social media: Children's abductor arrested in Bangkok Picture: Sanook Social media - and Facebook in particular - is being hailed after a man who abducted two young children from a mall in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok was arrested in Sanam Luang. The children - an eight year old girl and a 7 year old boy - went missing from the mall in Sukhumvit Soi 50 in the Klong Toei area on Saturday. They were in the care of their grandmother but had not returned after the mall closed. Wirot, the father of the boy, went to Phra Khanong police with CCTV evidence then launched a social media appeal. Phra Khanong police along with officers from the Chana Songkhram station arrested 27 year old Chaiyo at the southern end of Sanam Luang, said Met 5 chief Pol Maj-Gen Sophon Saraphat yesterday. The father had been contacted first by someone who had seen the children at the end of Charoen Sanitwong Soi 34. The poster had not yet seen the appeal about the children. The children were hungry and tired and the poster bought them food. When he later saw the appeal he contacted the father. Then came a post of a second sighting of the children at the Ratchanawee Samosorn boat landing in the Phra Lan area of the capital. The same man seen in the CCTV pictures at the mall was with them. Police made the arrest in Sanam Luang then charged Chaiyo with abducting children under 15 from parents and took him to Phra Khanong police station in whose jurisdiction the crime occurred.
