I want to buy a TV box for my GF

All she needs are the regular Thai TV channels. I am paying 524tbh per month to True Vision for their minimum package, 90% of which she doesn't use. The TV is not a smart TV (if it was it wouldn't play the cr@p that she watches), but it has HDMI port. Thanks.

True Vision should have all the regular basic Thai TV channels already? Cant remember any of the packages that dont include those 10 or so basic ones.

Call True and see what's going on, because you should already have them, or can easily get them.

Any DTV box will do if you live in area that has signal. You did not write where you are, but the difference between signal or no signal in most cases will only be how big antenna you need and where you need to place it. You can find any DTV box for DVB-T2 system on Lazada or Shopee, though it seems few of these have channels in same order as Thai TV channels listed (the rest have say 54925 instead of 3). If they have that green logo of government, they should be done according to Thai standard. Here are some links:

Read reviews before deciding on which. Samart (first link) is supposedly the best picture quality one, but in many cases you'll see people complaining they ordered one thing and got another.

You could as well go to Amorn Electronics at Fortune Town Ratchada (next to Phraram 9 MRT station), 4th floor, Mercure hotel side, to get the box if you are in Bangkok.

Now note that this is a receiver. It still needs an antenna, just like any TV. Basically box will convert your non-smart TV into a smart TV. What kind of antenna you need depends on the distance from transmitter. They exist in sizes from a USB stick lookalike, to a 1.5 meter long fishbone you mount on the roof. Not knowing where you live, I'd recommend you ask your neighbours and buy accordingly. The cable between antenna and receiver is same as for standard TV (analog) antenna.

If, for some reason you live so far in the sticks that you have no signal at all, PSI satellite dish could do the trick. It is about the same setup as True satellite TV - a dish, cable and receiver, and HDMI connection to your TV, except it uses a different receiver and receives only free channels. You'll likely need someone that's selling their sets to install it for you, but good news is after installation of either of them (DTV box+antenna or satellite box+antenna) there are no monthly fees.

Thanks for your replies. I live in Koh Phangan and have a very good internet connection with 3BB's fibre optic, but as far as distance from the transmitter is concerned, I have no idea tomazbodner. I like the look of the TX6 that Aussie Bruce has suggested, but I imagine that I have to check reception possibility before I buy it.

As you're already a true customer, you can get an extra box on your account for 50 THB a month -No upfront costs, and all the same channels that you already have in your package. Box is pretty good too - It's a google/android device. Plugs in Via HDMI and has WiFi - no cables required to connect to the internet.

This is from 2 years ago, pointing to possibly easier to access TV through satellite than terrestrial antenna:

To mark the beginning of this crucial process, the NBTC and Thai PBS yesterday said they would pull the plug on Thai PBS’s analog service on Koh Samui and Koh Phangan in Surat Thani province.

Viewers on those islands can continue to watch Thai PBS programmes via a digital TV receiver connected with a new version of the TV antenna.

However, according to Thai PBS’s study, more than 90 per cent of 40,000 households on the islands are watching free TV through cable and satellite TV.

Check out the AIS app, plenty of regular Thai channels all free

True and it comes free within the monthly basic internet service fee.

The box if free, no additional charges per month for the list of free channels (big list).

Users can add further channels/packages for a monthly fee. Some are 99Baht per month and up.

My Thai son and I'm aware on 4 or 5 families in the CM area who are using it, plenty of good channels for the kids.

If the TV is not a SMART device for many older TVs the AIS technicians can plug into something on the back of many devices and do an instant conversion to enable it to pick up the internet signal and get it on screen.

Extra box is a once only charge of 1,000 plus 100?Baht monthly charge, English can be set as the default language and as mentioned above extra channels are an option for small monthly fee.

Worth a look.

Not in Koh Phangan ignis, the best that 3BB offer is HBO for 39tbh per month. Internet TV will come no doubt and I think that it's already available from AIS, but I'm committed to 3BB  for another 10 months or so. Meantime I'm dumping True Vision and buying a box so my gf can continue to watch her soaps.
