More calls for government to legalise gambling in Thailand

Thai businessman, underground gambling tycoon and politician, Chat Taopoon, has called on the government to legalise gambling in Thailand.

Speaking at a cockfighting seminar in Nakhon Ratchasima on Sunday, Mr Taopoon said Thailand had a lot to gain from legalising gambling.

He said it wasn’t possible to expect people not to gamble and rather than forcing gambling underground, it should be legalised, Thai Rath reported.

He added that trying to track down gambling dens and arresting the people who frequent them is a waste of time.

Mr Taopoon said it was only “human nature” to want a challenge and to bet and win.

Mr Taopoon is the latest influential figure to call on the Thai government to legalise gambling.

Last month, former finance minister and current Kla Party leader Korn Chatikavanij floated the idea of legalising gambling as a way for the Thai government to collect more taxes.

Subject of legal gambling in Thailand has  recently been brought to the fore following the new wave of coronavirus infections in the country.

Earlier this year, officials said a large number of infections in Rayong and Chonburi could be traced back to people who had visited the so-called illegal gambling dens.

In response, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha last month said he would hold a public discussion on the pros and cons of legalising gambling in Thailand.

So, in other words they are now telling it like it really is. The fact that he is a politician and a businessman protects him for procecution and jail for illegal activities beeing an underground gambling tycoon.

After that, I am even more convinced that Prayut is telling the truth when he says that he never got one bath from illigal casinos. ????

For some reason many Thais that I know are very prone to gambling.  And, in my view it is those who can least afford it.  Legalizing it for foreigners and tourists who must present their passports to enter is one thing.  Allowing the general Thai population will just lead to a poorer population while they believe the next bet will give them a big winning.  Remember, all the beautiful gambling dens in Las Vegas were, in part at least, built on losers money.

Singapore restricts entry of Singaporeans by extracting $100 from them to enter a casino (yes you must show your passport). Let the foreigners come in a lose their shirts and direct the funds to hospitals and schools..

Sounds good, but the downside....at the risk of sounding racist.....Pattaya will be swamped......but I guess many might argue it is now, but with farangs....

It was flour

Is flour a banned substance in the land down under?

How then do they create those meat pies to which they are so culturally bound - I speak as one who was once offered an astonishing concoction termed a "floater" in a mere 45 Centigrade mess hall. My luncheon of choice, a light tossed salad and a chilled consommé was not available!

Got to keep the Chinese happy.

and yet they should be very or extremely careful with what they wish for....  Cambodian neighbors did try and the result was not as expected....but since Chinese government is closing down on the ones hiding millions/billions in Macao they may be looking for alternatives, anything  is possible

If the unelected "PM" was telling the truth, it must have been about the only time.
