Council of Minister approves harsher penalties for those who break COVID-19 rules

Featured Replies

The Council of Ministers today unanimously approved the imposing of harsher legal penalties against individuals and entities who violate the COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures and rules. This decision to impose stern legal action was decided with the worsening of the third community outbreak dubbed “February 20 Community Event” which has infected 236 people with 77 hotspots identified so far.

The decision for harsher penalties was disclosed in an official letter addressed to Interior Minister Sar Kheng and Health Minister Mam Bun Heng, a copy of which was obtained by Khmer Times this afternoon. The Council of Ministers said it has approved a harsher penalty for individuals as well as establishments who flouted the government’s COVID-19 preventive measures or do not cooperate with the authorities in their work to contain the coronavirus.

It was also decided that foreigners who did not adhere to the COVID-19 SOPs and rules will face deportation with no re-entry into the Kingdom while stricter provisions in the law will be applied to locals as a deterrent measure in the fight against the COVID-19 spread. As for business owners or managers who do not cooperate with the authorities, their businesses will be ordered to be shut down and their licenses revoked.
