Five elephants fall sick after eating grass laced with Paraquat weed killer

Three elephants, which have fallen sick after eating grass laced with Paraquat, in Om-goi district of Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Mai, have arrived at the elephant hospital in Lampang province for treatment.

The three pachyderms, one of which is very unwell with burns to its mouth and tongue, were trucked from the forest, straddling Om-goi district of Chiang Mai and Tha Song Yang district of Tak, to the hospital on Thursday night.

The other two sick elephants are expected to arrive at the hospital tonight.

Paraquat weed killer ...

No more toxic chemicals in the food chain .

And elsewhere ...

this stuff does not only kill the weeds , it kills insects , it kills humans ( cancer ) , it kills about everything that eats larger quantities of it .

Everything can be done in a better way by now , with biological or , at least , less toxic stuff .

Producing and using this stuff is a crime .

Was Paraquat not banned last year?

There was a decision to ban paraquat last year, it becomes law in June this year, and that

was only on imports. Who knows how much is sloshing around the country presently and will,

sadly, continue to be used for years to come.
