An elderly Cambodian woman who was found infected with COVID-19 succumbed to the virus yesterday at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital in Phnom Penh, bringing the total number of coronavirus deaths in the Kingdom to 20.

 

According to the Ministry of Health’s statement released this evening, the 72-year-old woman who lived in Phnom Penh’s Por Senchey district died of the COVID-19 at 1 pm on Saturday. She was admitted to the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital at 8 am on April 2 for intensive care after she reportedly felt extremely fatigued.

 

The doctors took her specimen for testing and the result showed positive for COVID-19 by the laboratory of the National Institute of Public Health.

Despite efforts from doctors, the patient could not be saved.

Vietnam, which has 6.5 times the population, only recorded 35 deaths so far, to put it into perspective.

 

It got really tiring to read the opinion of people, who for the most part knew next to nothing about Cambodia, posting that it's due to this or that reason that Cambodia had so few cases and no deaths for such a long time. To which I always replied that it was due to the virus not circulating here. Now, we see the results after it does. The silver lining is that new infections have trended downwards, in the mid-double digit figures for a few days in a row now.
