Flood Disaster In North; Bangkok Braces For High Waters

"The Hydrographic Department says several factors are causing the water level of the Chao Phraya River to rise, such as heavy rain and the water flower from the North."

Gee, who'da thought.

No,mate, blame it on the melting Antarctic glaciers....................Oh, wait a minute, didn't one of the Thai scientific intelligentsia comment that melting glaciers and rising ocean levels won't affect Thailand? ...................................It's too far away from Antarctica ?

Yep, scientific fact. :o

It's not as ridiculous as it appears. You can educate yourself more on that. There's a thread about it.

.....it happens in 12 month cycles. It's been happening long before people were around these parts and it will continue long after we're gone (and all that's left behind is piles of debris and toxic swamps).

So what's the big surprise - the severity? Yes, floods come a lot sooner on the heels of droughts, not least because of abysmally poor municipal planning coupled with cutting trees and ground cover. In a word: Overpopulation.

So things seem to be more severe?!? If you build a roof for your house, do you just build it strong enough for a moderate rainfall, or do you build it strong enough to withstand the most tempestious storms on record? I'd opt for the latter. This land, and most habitable land the world over is burdoned beyond carrying capacity. If you want a glimpse of the future, take a look at DARFUR, western Sudan. There's millions of people with no place to go. It's territory that could barely support a few nomad tribes in the best of times. It's not only places that are too dry (Sahara) but also those too wet (Bangladesh) that will be our demise. Here's some unsolicited advice from a man who got his tubes tied many years ago: Wear a condom. It wouldn't hurt to encourage people to plant trees and educate them about how to replenish the soil (hint: compost grass & weeds ....something few Thais know how about, or care to do).

Too true, I too watched 'The great global warming swindle', certainly an eye-opener. For those of you who haven't yet,

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=44...=global+warming

Co2 emissions following temperature rises, not vice-versa, scientists jumping on the band-wagon because its the only way they can get funding etc, an hour and fifteen minutes but nonetheless very interesting viewing.

Thanks to robenroute for having mentioned it and thank you for the link, VERY interesting.

Here's a thought.

Perhaps nothing is being done because land furthur north and a bit higher than Bangkok is being bought by rich influential Thai's in preparation for this disaster. It wouldn't be the first time land was bought cheap around potential large Thai investments. Use the new airport as an example.

If Bangkok will truley be underwater, then land furthur north would be worth a fortune.

Perhaps there should be inquiries into what influential Thai's are investing in land that seems worthless.

If this is happening, it might explain why preventive measures are not being taken.
