From A Distance

Take a line from well-known song. One that opens your mind to another time.  Nostalgic Songs that you pull a single 'not repeated' line from that is meaningful to you.  Examples of a few verses that come to my mind.

'every generation is like the one before...'

'You know you stopped me dead while I was passing by And now I beg to see you dance just one more time'

'Shoes on, get up in the morn' Cup of milk, let's rock and roll King Kong, kick the drum Rolling on like a Rolling Stone'

In time of troubles it is always good to hear a well written and up lifting song that says so much about us and the world we live in.. and Bette Midler sings it well...

From a distance the world looks blue and green
And the snow capped mountains white
From a distance the ocean meets the stream
And the eagle takes to flight

From a distance
There is harmony
And it echoes through the land
It's the voice of hope
It's the voice of peace
It's the voice of every man

From a distance
We all have enough
And no one is in need
And there are no guns, no bombs and no disease
No hungry mouths to feed

From a distance
We are instruments
Marching in a common band

Playing songs of hope
Playing songs of peace
They are the songs of every man

God is watching us
God is watching us
God is watching us
From a distance

From a distance
You look like my friend
Even though we are at war
From a distance
I just cannot comprehend
What all this fighting for
From a distance
There is harmony
And it echoes through the land

And it's the hope of hopes
It's the love of loves
It's the heart of every man

It's the hope of hopes
It's the love of loves
This is the song for every man...

And your point is? dose it makes a different how many versions are out there? it seems like you have missed the whole point of this topic...

I was merely confirming that From a Distance is a really great song, if 64 people have recorded it.

Now how about 'Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away'.

Well, your earlier post sounded dismissive and belittling like of either the song or Bette Midler, good that now you have cleared it up...

There are however some people in this world who do not like the song or Bette Midler.

Yep, I,m one of them, as soon as they start introducing phrases like "God is watching", I'm done with it or any such song with that type of lyric.

Me to. The song has a nice tune, but comes across as some kind of religions Christian  hymn.

So I guess God Only Knows by The Beach Boys isn't on your playlist!   LOL

I worked as a funeral director for some time.

Do you know how many people have been lowered into the ground to "you are the wind beneath my wings"?

If I ever hear that song again I'll kill someone.

For me, I really like the lyrics.

"Lord, here comes the flood.

We will say goodbye to flesh and blood.

If again, the seas are silent

In any still alive,

It'll be those who gave their island to survive.

Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry"

I never listen to words of songs on the radio, and I don't like Midler, so I didn't know what the words were till I just read them. Very uplifting.

The title of my post 'From A Distance' was not intended to imply the song of the same name. Everyone just assumed and neglected to read instructions or contribute my reason for posting. My expectation was for people to think of a line in a song that they remember from their past and post it. Just a line a verse. I had hoped we would keep it going and have some fun with it. Example, 'does your chewing gum loose its flavor on the bed post overnight,' and ' Alice! Alice! who the *&( is Alice'. Cheers mate.

"Take the last train to Clarksville

And I'll meet you at the station"

When I first heard it, so very long ago, not listening closely to the lyrics, I thought it was just a happy pop song.

The last two lines of the song though, reveal the sadness, the reality of that dreadful time.

"And I don't know

 if I'm ever coming home"

The Covid Anthem -

Hiding in my room, safe within my womb
I touch no one and no one touches me
I am a rock
I am an island
And a rock feels no pain
And an island never cries

AWSOME

I lived with the decent folks
In the hills of old Vermont
Where what you do all day
Depends on what you want
And I took up with a woman there
Though I was still a kid
And I smile like the sun
To think of all the loving that we did

OK, here's a song that really spoke to me when I was rejected by a woman I was besotted with ( a very long time ago ).

Shine on you crazy diamond performed by Pink Floyd- one of the greatest groups to grace the planet.

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun
Shine on you crazy diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky
Shine on you crazy diamond
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom
Blown on the steel breeze
Come on you target for faraway laughter
Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon
Shine on you crazy diamond
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light
Shine on you crazy diamond
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision
Rode on the steel breeze
Come on you raver, you seer of visions
Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine

I got ketchup on my blue jeans, I just burnt my hand
Lord, it's hard to be a bachelor man
I got girls that can cook, I got girls that can clean
I got girls that can do anything in between
I got to get ready, make everything right
'Cause all my rowdy friends are comin' over tonight
