PHUKET (NNT) - Following the third wave of COVID-19 in Thailand, the number of COVID-19 cases in Phuket province has increased. It has become necessary for the province to provide more field hospitals and quarantine facilities, including alternative local quarantine (ALQ) hotels, to accommodate patients. Currently, there is no shortage of beds, thanks to other sites and public health resources provided by the private sector and the general public.

On April 3, the Phuket Provincial Public Health Office reported that a 29-year-old woman had tested positive to COVID-19 and her case was linked to a cluster of infections in Bangkok’s Thong Lo area. Phuket now has more than 300 COVID-19 cases, which is higher than the first-wave’s peak.

To reduce crowded conditions in hospitals, a field hospital was set up in the Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Phuket Campus, on April 11, to treat patients who are asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms. The field hospital has 170 beds.

Narong Woonciew, Governor of Phuket said this is to prepare for the future, if there are more cases. State hospitals alone are for treating people who have already been infected. That’s why we set up the field hospital. Today, we’re ready to bring in recovering patients or those with a negative test result. We’re analyzing the worst case scenario and making preparations. As for this field hospital, our target is 500, but it doesn’t mean that the worst will happen. We’re making sure that we have more than sufficient resources."

As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise, Phuket province is ready to open its second field hospital, located in Phuket Rajabhat University (PKRU). This field hospital can accommodate 265 patients. It can operate immediately in emergency situations. Both field hospitals have a total of 435 beds.

Local quarantine and ALQ facilities in the province have 437 rooms in total. The provincial governor has ordered the Phuket Provincial Public Health Office to coordinate with more hotels that are interested in joining the project and to conduct the hospitel standard assessment. They can be used as an alternative for COVID-19 patients.

Narong Woonciew, Governor of Phuket said that we’re looking at many areas. If necessary, we may upgrade some hotels that provide quarantine services, so that they can be used as a field hospital. We want to have sufficient resources and make preparations in advance. However, we’re not saying that it will happen. There are two parts. The first part is preventive measures, such as vaccine administration. The public health measures are being implemented continuously. We’re focusing on mask-wearing and social distancing. We’re finding accommodation for risk groups and the infected. We’re finding ways to treat them.

Phuket has stepped up its screening facilities for land, air and water transport. The areas include Tha Chat Chai checkpoint, Phuket International Airport and piers. There are no reports of non-residents being quarantined in the province, but local authorities have prepared measures to monitor them, ensuring that they follow the disease-control protocols.
