NONTHABURI (NNT) - Nonthaburi province has decided to close down Nonthaburi Municipal Market for seven days for disinfection, after the discovery of a COVID-19 infection in the area; the local municipal office is to close for three days.

Officers from the Public Health Service Office have set up a screening tent to collect the information of officials at Nonthaburi Municipal Office who are at risk of exposure to COVID-19 after more than ten people working in the building were found to have contracted the virus. Nonthaburi Mayor Somnuek Thanadech says the office will be shuttered and disinfected for three days, dismissing concerns that public services will be impacted.

Sombat Market, near the office and the municipal market, has already suspended operations. The municipal market is to undergo cleaning over a seven-day period starting May 8. Ahead of the closure, vendors were seen trying to sell off fresh goods and perishables but assured officials they will comply with protocols.

Public health officers commenced with disinfection of some areas of the market ahead of the official closure. They are also to screen vendors and other at-risk individuals tied to the site.

Outsiders have been banned from the Nonthaburi Provincial Administration’s landfill after garbage delivered to the site rose to 1,600 tons a day due to the third wave of COVID-19 infections with over a million masks part of the total. Access to the landfill is to be restricted for fears of COVID-19 contamination.
