Born on May 14, 1953 and educated in Prague since the age of nine, it was only when he attained the age of 14 that he got his first taste of the art when he starred in ‘The Little Prince’, a film made by his father, Prince Norodom Sihanouk. Prince Norodom Sihamoni remained in Prague where he attended the National Conservatory and the Academy of Music Arts, concentrating on dance, music, and theatre and graduated in 1975.

In 1992 he was named permanent representative of Cambodia to the United Nations. In 1993, the year his father was re-crowned King, Prince Sihamoni became Cambodia’s permanent representative to UNESCO, a position he held until 2004. According to John A. Marston, Prince Sihamoni’s selection as King probably represented King Sihanouk’s desire that someone neutral and politically untainted succeed him as most of his other children and siblings were involved in political activities.

King Norodom Sihamoni was crowned in an elaborate traditional ceremony on October 29. The ceremonies began on October 28 and ended on October 30. The picture of King Sihamoni being kissed on the forehead by his parents is an endearing testament of the love of parents for their child who was born in pomp and pageantry but lived a life of arts and culture.
