BANGKOK (NNT) - The Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO) has procured additional 5.5 million tablets of the anti-viral drug Favipiravir, to boost the country’s supply amid rising demand for COVID-19 treatments.

 

GPO deputy director Sirikul Metheerangsan said the first batch of 3 million tablets was delivered to the GPO’s warehouse yesterday and the remaining 2.5 million tablets will arrive on Monday, for distribution to public health units nationwide.

 

She said about 50,000 Favipiravir tablets are currently being prescribed to COVID-19 patients every day and the drug’s use is being strictly supervised by the Public Health Ministry’s Department of Medical Sciences.

 

Meanwhile, the Chinese embassy in Bangkok said 500,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from Sinovac, donated by the Chinese government, arrived on 14 May to help Thailand curb its COVID-19 outbreak.

The question is why?, I thought they were going to produce their own under the GPO label.  Something seems strange with the stories that are put forth by this government when it comes to buying more vaccines and what is really delivered.

I we read only the other day that they were "cracking" down on fake news. That would mean there should be no further claptrap put out by this government, including this latest report which you quite rightly pointed out as strange, and yet another example of their duplicity.

Favipiravir is not a vaccine. It is an anti-viral treatment for those who already have a viral infection, including (experimentally) the corona virus.

 

To the extent it has been shown to work (and I have no expertise therein), it would obviously be sensible for the Thai health system to have plenty for use on hand.

Clinical evidence in favor of favipiravir is rare.

Great start!  Only a little more than 60 million to go.

Don't understand why Thailand is so impressed with Favipiravir. Where is the proof that this drug is effective for Covid-19?

 

The world wide medical community doesn't give much support for the use of this drug for Covid-19 and there are many negative comments about its use. It has many adverse reactions and side effects.

Good thing that there aren't a lot more people who have been afflicted with Covid since March 2020 or some might say that's the reason why there are more dead people now. 

Those same lunatics might point out that since March of 2020 several studies were undertaken of hydroxychloroquine and found nothing good came of administering it.

Will we be given cups of bleach to drink next week!

It's logistically just as difficult getting this medicine out as vaccines. Why not just give the vaccine?

 

Oh yeah, there are none in country and government apparently will not let private entities import.

 

 

Circumstantial evidence for vaccine's arrival bleak.

While there is lots of controversy regarding efficacy of HCQ it's not dangerous. I recall decades ago Lonely Planet recommending weekly dosage to ward off malaria in Africa.

 

Pharma is nothing more than a huge mafia. Evidence of this is simply everywhere.

I took a quick look at your website. Unfortunately, it doesn’t provide links to the clinical trial results, so I had to Google my way. And I found that some of the trials that were reported on your site as positive were actually negative when I read the actual clinical trial abstract as published.

 

this is not to say that all of the results are fake, but the positive results mostly came from Third world nations where clinical trial procedures are not so well established, ie some were not randomized.
