Deputy mayor Manote Nongyai and his teams were supervising work to clear an area for a new multi-story car park in Pattaya, reported Sophon Cable TV on Facebook.

The 5 story Talad Lan Pho car park will be built on an area of one and a quarter rai next to the Bang Lamung district chief's residence.

It will be used for cars of customers going to the market to buy tourist trinkets.

The treasure department gave City Hall permission to use the rented land earlier this year.

It has now been officially handed over for use by the contractor for building.

A total of 239 cars will be able to park there at any one time with hopes that 2,000 will use the facility each day.

It has a budget of 90 million baht. The land being used is part of the Lan Pho municipal park.

Are unnecessary multi level parking garages the new Beach Rd renovation scam? Like the monstrosity at T21 , the failure at Bali Hi. If there's a park there let's put a car park on it.

is so sad. Is one of  only two green spots in the whole concrete jungle.

Indeed  , why not build it here. And if more space is required then fill the mud flat. Instead of here.

239 cars, 10 hour day, less than 1 hour each car and that does not take into account the vendors parking.

Lol - whoever writes this apparently has no clue what the Lan Pho market sells.

Fish, squid, clams, crabs and shrimp are now "tourist trinkets" ?????

The (mostly Thai) customers go there to buy fresh seafood ! Not "tourist trinkets" !

Meanwhile.

I thought they had already had the go ahead and had started construction a couple months ago ? Or was that just another in the endless series of "drainage" projects ?

I am really curious to see if they go ahead with the original plan that called for each floor of the building to be a whole 2 meters from floor to ceiling. (Then run the usual gauntlet of pipes, cables and signs from the ceiling, giving even less clearance for vehicles and people to move in there.) Gonna be a tight fit for a lot of cars/trucks/vans and some people even.

They will probably take out all the trees and realize they have a problem and leave it as a vacant building block for 10 years. Then the guy next door will take it as part of his house.

Sure remove the trees and make an unnecessary parking lot. Like at Jomtien North end beach. The oblivious Thais, chinese ,Indians and Russians won't care. But these people are dreaming if they can get away with making mess of environment with the upmarket crowd they keep on about attracting to Thailand.

Good hint. Now I know what they mean.

I call it "Naklua seafood market".

On the rare occasions of visiting Pattaya by car, I always have to go there on the last morning to bring stuff home.

Last time in March I was definitely the only "farang" around.

Video call home to find out what stuff to buy

Much to the bemusement of the vendors ????

When I do go there, it is often early in the morning (around 6am) and many of the vendors are still setting up. Often, if I'm heading to Sa Kaeo, I'll bring a styro cooler packed with ice, buy a bunch of seafood, pack it up and ride off. (It's about a 3 hour trip depending on weather and traffic.)

Sometimes some friends will want to go there in the early afternoon, buy some shrimp and squid and clams and have them cooked at one of the shops there, then sit on the grassy area behind the clock tower to eat it.

That grassy area will still be there when the parking garage is finished and the area it's going into doesn't get much traffic at any rate (that I've seen) except for the odd person wandering through there (maybe looking for a quiet place to smoke or take a <deleted>).

But hopefully the garage will cut down on the parking issues that generally happen there. Very limited parking in the front, hard to get to the rear parking area, which is usually full of the vendor's trucks with their coolers and fish tanks.
Not usually a big problem when on the scooter or Harley as they had a designated section for motorcycles which was rarely ever crowded, but in a car/SUV/Pick-up, you could be stuck for quite awhile waiting for a spot to open.

The area is the entrance to the park. There is no seating so it can not exactly be  full of people but it is an attractive way to get in and it gives a break from the monotony of grey concrete everywhere else. It is common for people to walk through parks enjoying the greenery without actually sitting. No one believes that 6 months after the vertical garden is built that all the plants wont be dead and it will just be concrete. I still find it hard to work out how people will access the park now. The entrance through the other car park will be busier with extra cars and Mum with the baby will need to run the gauntlet of crossing the road with cars racing into the new car park.
