Fruit Identification

Featured Replies

Anyone know what this is?

My tree is dropping piles of the fruit, but nobody is gathering them so they cannot be too useful.

I am told it is not edible, but I see them for sale at the market.

Looks like Santol...Thais call it "Kraton"

This is a phone app to recognize all fruit and trees

Eatable, and they taste good.

You are supposed to eat the white staff around the stones.

And Thais say those fruits have to "forget the tree". Or in other words, don't eat them directly from the tree. Wait a couple of days before you eat them.

Actually you can eat the other part...any street seller will slice it up for you and mix it with sweet chili sauce in the bag...I've never eaten the white stuff in the middle !

My gf told me the same.

But she and I like the white staff more - without any sauce. Try it!

What the Indians call a custard apple maybe.

Quite edible - just I don.t like them.

Interesting? Never thought of trying the white staff! Not into the sauce either. Wife spits it out.

Our staff are all brown though.

Kraton is correct.  I understand there are several varieties, some edible and some not.  Had a very old tree in my yard a few years back and they dropped by the thousands.  Had to scoop them up every day and toss them over the wall to a scrub area.  Depending on where you live they may attract literally thousands of fire ants.  Best to clean them up daily and dispose of them where the fire ants can be free to feast on them.

Correct we grow them as well my wife loves them and sell them as well because it's a large tree.

David Thompson's 'Thai Street Food' has an excellent recipe for preparing Santol with peanuts and chillies.

mrs Fantom uses this recipe.... delicious.
