“The time to act is now,” said WHO Representative to Cambodia, Dr Li Ailan who added “If we work together in solidarity, we can stop this outbreak.” That was on March 11 when the first death from Covid-19 was reported in Cambodia.

Now, 81 days later, as of May 30, another 208 lives have been lost and the death toll does not seem to be abating as cases, fueled and fed by the Community Event of February 20 followed by other cases, probably the Indian Variant as announced by Secretary of State for Health, Or Vandine, has not seen the Covid-19 situation in Cambodia taking a sharp drop.

Under normal circumstance, a sudden sharp decline would be applauded and greeted with great joy and optimism but Covid-19 has shown in many parts of the world, and in Cambodia, it keeps coming back to wreck more havoc, death and misery just as when it appears to be coming under control and many countries have fallen prey to this misgiving falsehood.

So what's the big deal when less than an average of three people a day are dying in Cambodia of Covid-19? Cambodia is a nation of millions. I would expect that most people dying are elderly, and may well have died of natural causes this year or the next.
