A protest in Kandal Province ended violently yesterday with a man being shot and National Road 51 being closed. The protest took place on state plantations in Tuol Prech commune, Ang Snoul district over Government plans to use the land for military use and also as a garbage disposal site.

Local people, who have used the land for their own purposes, protested today against the plans. However, the mood turned ugly with home-made barricades being erected across National Road 51 as well as protesters making fires access the road, preventing traffic from travelling along the road.

While Military and Police forces attempted to break up the unsanctioned protest, at least one shot was fired and a man was hit by a “military” bullet. The extent of the man’s injuries are not yet known.
