LaoPo Posted May 23, 2007 Share Posted May 23, 2007 Thailand to spend 6 million dollars on Russian palace May 23, 2007, 3:23 GMT Bangkok - Thailand's government has allocated 210 million baht (6.2 million dollars) for the renovation of Peterhof Palace in St Petersburg, Russia, to mark the 110th anniversary of Thai-Russian relations, news reports said Wednesday. The Thai cabinet on Tuesday gave the green light for the project to renovate the left wing Peterhof palace, where Thai King Chulalongkorn stayed when he visited Russia in 1897, said the Bangkok Post newspaper. Russian authorities are also planning to join in the project by providing another 4 million dollars to the repair work. King Chulalongkorn, the first Thai monarch to travel extensively in Europe, is credited for modernizing Thailand's bureaucracy and forging its foreign affairs, much as Peter the Great did for Russia. terryp Posted May 23, 2007 Share Posted May 23, 2007 Make absolutely NO sence..Thailand is in a real mess & they start donating money to a Country that is far richer in real terms (All the gas/oil being sold to Europe, China etc etc) Thailand needs to look at sorting out problems in Thailand before dumping money abroad. Trying to get rid of all those dollars the BOT has been accumulating? Or just someone somewhere getting 10%??? //Edit: Or maybe they genuinely want to restore this palace far away? Nevermind in terms of a Thai civil servent income, what is it in terms of Russian/Thai commerce? Celebrating a long standing international relationship with a contribution to the resteration of a Royal Palace.. very much in line with Thai sentiments I'm sure. Maybe the money 210,000,000 Bht. which going to help pay the cost of drugs for the poor is not a glamorous job. Thai govt rathers to spend on restoration Russian palace. It's definitely a show case for the international diplomates circuit. It's about 'face' as you know how Thais are. Remember ? Thaksin did the same by ordering a constructing of 'The Air Force One' jet. Thaksin flew it for ASEAN Conference which held in Vietnam few years back.
