Earthquakes and volcanic sulfur dioxide emissions related to magmatic unrest were still observed in Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Monday, July 5.

Taal Volcano continues to emit high levels sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas and steam-rich plumes in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Monday.

In the past 24 hours, Taal generated 17 volcanic earthquakes, including one volcanic tremor that lasted for 45 minutes, and 16 low frequency volcanic earthquakes caused by movements or eruptions of magma from the volcano.

On June 4, the SO2 emission averaged 22,628 tonnes/day -- the highest ever recorded in Taal.

White smoke was seen billowing out of Taal Volcano in Batangas on Sunday July 4, 2021  (Manila Bulletin).

Taal Volcano had 17 volcanic earthquakes, including one volcanic tremor event having a duration of 45 minutes, 16 low-frequency volcanic earthquakes, and a low-level background tremor that has persisted since April 8.

Volcanic Unrest

According to experts, Volcanic unrest is defined as the period of time when a volcano is showing unusual activity or is erupting. Unrest may last for months to years.

Electrokinetic electric and magnetic fields result from fluid flow through layered volcanic rocks as ions anchored to solid material induce equivalent ionic charge of opposite sign in the fluids. The fluid flow itself is thermally and gravitationally driven.

Authorities in the Philippines started evacuating thousands of people last Thursday, after the alert status was raised on a restive volcano that spewed a one-kilometre (0.62 mile) high plume of gas and steam.

The alert for the Taal volcano, is about 70 km (45 miles) south of central Manila.
