The Supreme Court yesterday heard the appeal of a South African man who was jailed for life in 2018 for transporting nearly 1 kilogrammes of cocaine from Brazil to Cambodia, by hiding it in his stomach, at the Phnom Penh International Airport. Soeung Panhavuth, President of the Trial Chamber at the Supreme Court, identified the convict as Blignaut Chan, 26, a tourist. He was charged with “drug transport” under Article 40 of Cambodia’s Law on Drugs Control.

Panhavuth said Chan was convicted in 2018 by Phnom Penh Municipal Court to a life sentence and fined about $10,000. The Appeal Court upheld his conviction on July 3, 2020.

During the hearing Chan admitted committing the offence but said he is not a drug trafficker only a courier working for pay. He said that the drugs seized from him belonged to a Brazilian man named “Austin”, who is at large and lives in Brazil.
