Virgin Galactic: Sir Richard Branson rockets to the edge of space

Recommended Posts

Surely the title of the topic should be "First British Virgin Islander Travels To Edge Of Space".

Sir Richard Branson makes great play of wrapping himself in patriotic trappings to promote his businesses, but Britain's best-known entrepreneur  revealed he had been living as a tax exile for the last ten years after moving his main residence to a private Caribbean island.

Branson has swapped the union flag for the ensign of the British Virgin Islands, where income is not taxed. Having nominated Necker, an island he bought in the 1970s, as his tax base.

I suppose, getting in your own rocket ship and going into sub orbit

is not something you think is  great.

OK up to you, just focus on the negative stuff.

But Iron man and Bonzo, the other guys, are wimps.

Well done Sir Richard, the guy with the big Kahuna's

He started out by selling records a bit cheaper than rivals but if you went into the Virgin Megastore it was hard to find a bargain, everything about Branson is about perception people believed they were getting a bargain while he was getting rich, The Megastore went the way of the trains and if the planes dont start flying soon then they will disappear as well. Dont hear much about his financial services  or Virgin Mobile either, small players. His golden era is long gone and going into space is just a publicity stunt, he wont make any money from it, he does not have the time and to top it all off he still thinks that the UK will re join the EU, his thought processes seem rather odd to me. A fully paid member of the UK, when it suits him and its free.

It'll be very interesting to read the responses on here, when Bezos tries to do it.

I've yet to see a response from Boris, which really does surprise me.

Never mind, we did it first.

The spacecraft was made and flown in the USA.

Actually, no.

The engine is hybrid, using technology patented by AMROC in the 1980's, and utilized by SpaceDEV about 20 years ago.

The Germans never knew about hybrid rocket engines.

Russians?

"The history of hybrid rocket propulsion goes back to 1933, when the first known hybrid rocket motor, using LOX and gelled gasoline as propellants, by Tikhonarov and Korolev was test-flown in the Soviet Union [1]. This was followed by German developments using N2O and LOX as oxidizer and coal and graphite as fuel respectively. First work on hybrid rocket propulsion in the United States also began before the beginning of World War 2"
