Dear y'all.

Being a member here for 2 years, I'm the worst non native English speaking person :D.

Let me tell you guys about a part my past.

When I finished my high school(I was 17 years old).I got a seat of Faculty of Science at Chaing Mai University.I did well with it and my major should be Indrustial Chemistry ( So -called Chemical Enginerring). That Time I had a bf, he asked me if i wanted to have a future with him.NO hestitate, i said yes.My life have been changed since then.

He got Elec. engineer while i got Vet ( i supposed I could get a seat at a faculty of Dentristy somewhere).

If you guys ask me about my thought,That time i felt just soso. I just wanted to stay and live with my BF( don't call me as a d-ick eater :o , to far from that)

I spent 6 years at Chulalongkorn University ( well, being a Doctor, dentist and Vet you have to study that long.)

Honestly , i felt soso with my life that time. It's not the thing i want to be ( I want to be an engineer or dentist).

However, the more i work the more i like my Vet carreer.I have been doing well with Surgery and Dermatology.

Me and BF have quited our relationship later when I was 21 yo.It was ok.

The show must go one.I have been working as a vet for 10 year since then. I have had an idea to upgrade my class by taking a master degree abroad.

I took the IELTS examination(International English Language Testing System) 2 weeks ago . I did it not that well .I cried for 2 days and had been vomiting for a week .Obviously,my weakest point are Reading and Writing Part.

In Vet 's field (Master degree) needs 6-7 Overall band. (Utrecth University needs overall 6.5 and for writing part = 6)

My Overall band is 6

(Listening =6 ,Reading = 6 ,Writing=6 and speaking =6)

my supposed to get ( 6-7 / 4-5/4-5/6-7)

If you ask me whether I'm happy with my score or not . i Say yes ,although I need to get 6.5.

I dont give up by now. I think i know what i want to apply in Univ. (I like dermatology ,but i chose anesthesiology)

I have found the thing i want to study it's "Animal Behaviour" It's interesting subject. Many developed countries have "Veterinary behaviourist " but not in Thailand.

I met some Professors in my school today. They will do "Letter of Recommendtion" for me

I have a great idea for writing "statement of purpose".

This is the course i will apply http://www.internationalmasters.uu.nl/inde...an_en/index.cfm

I hope i get it.

Thank you

Bambi

Hey Bambi!

I've met a lot of Thai students doing post-grad degrees here in the UK. Most of them arrive here with a knowledge of English that's far from perfect. Some of them go back home with the same standard :o but the ones who make the effort to make friends with local people and perhaps get involved in extra-curricular activities soon become very good. Best of luck with your application to Utrecht.

Go for it, BambinA!

Do that Toefl test. You want help editing your "statement of purpose" I will do it for you. I'm sure other esteemed posters would be glad to help in any way that would guarantee your admission.

Quite frankly, you have way more guts than I do. You post here on TV in better English than some of the native speakers, you help folks with their pets, etc, and everybody loves you.

You start your mission and there will be friends to help, if you want.

Can I blame Thai education system??

1)We have english courses but all scope in grammar. Many Thai students get good grammar(not me :o ) but mostly can not speak and communicate in real life.

2)We have been tought in a varirty kind of subjects. But all U have to remember what teachers teach us.Mostly Th students have no capacity for practising from our idea.

3)TH education system does not make student know what they want to be.You will see many students in universities moves themselves to other faculty.

(as i know , some graduated students from medicine , dentisyty ,phamarcology and veterinay quit their professional carrers and work as a flight attendance or thing else

4)we thai students have not been tought how to write essays

...I'm the worst non native English speaking person :o .

This is not correct BambinA.. I am. But you do not have to worry about it.... there is only one English speaking country in the world who will abusse you for that...the rest are cool!

The IELTS is not easy (I had to do it too) so do not feel bad about it...just do it again if needed.

I went to my second degree when I was 28...and I was already married. So I believe that it is just matter of decision.

Go for it.....and I wish, as it was for me, that this will be the best decision that you have ever taken (in academic matters) as it will open many doors for you in the future...

The best of luck

Bambi, I'm sorry to hear about your disappointment. You're obviously a skilled, experienced, and caring vet. professional, from everything I've read of yours here on TV. However, you're an example of how reality hasn't been able to enter English teaching in Thai schools, especially if you're not paying to be in the upper .5-1% of Thai schools, and sometimes even then. Most functional ability in Thai English never goes beyond very basic conversation and writing- shockingly, even in some of the "best" schools and even university programs (there are university level English classes in Thailand in which the students generate book reports- I'm not kidding). The big problem is that the entire system here conspires to hide the fact that there *is* a problem; people still get passed, they graduate, get taught by incompetents, go on to become teachers. No fail, no fail, no fail. But no real English being taught, either.

You are doing better than most, even, given the ability I've seen you display on the forum. But you're far from being ready to write in formal academic English, very far. It will make things very difficult for you, and it must be something of a shock to come to grips with this when you enter the full international environment. But you're bright, and you're a winner- it may take you more time, but you can get what you want. Hang in there and keep trying.

big hug,

"Steven"

Wish you luck, rather than reading you need to be speaking English more. English was my worst subject in school but the beauty is one can still communicate without knowing all the grammer stuff, just speak when you can with English speaking people

A little off post but to comment on yours, yes yes yes and yes, I have already told my son to follow up his English lessons with me, in one of his last home work assignments he was asked (through a text book) to explain singular and plural, yet the book did not have a correct example for him to follow...... <deleted>

I signed him off and told them why, yet they still signed back saying he doesn’t understand, so now when we meet for student progress meets, I try to work a way for him to express both singular and plural, yet when he does it goes unnoticed, pees me right off, he’s a good lad trying as hard as he can.

for Endure, i love teddy .Give ne 1 :D

Dear Ijustwannateach ,

You are absolutely right.Being a teacher like you,you may understand about Thai education system.

Farang teachesrs may see many bloody great number of grammartic thai studenst. ;however in real mostly of students can not speak english with farang. WHy??? Thai students are concerned about speaking with wrong grammar. Many educated TH students pretend to have hiccups :o

Furthermore, we thai have not been tought about argument essay.

as

Introduction

Body

-for

-against

conclusion.

Moreover, as i have read in thai furum ,Many Thai students who study abroad don't dare to give an idea in class. No opinion,Nothing just keeping quiet. In my opinion

1) language barrier (for some)

2) we have been tough as" listen to the teacher, stay quiet and no argue with senior people)

My attitude may be funny. But ,TIT

(not my tits :D )

I would be ecstatically happy to even string a sentence together in any language other than English. Like people who can play an instrument or speak another language I am always in awe of them , I really struggle with it.

I wouldnt be too down hearted your already clever enough to be a vet which is a great achievement. Good luck :o

Ban, very true

When I complain about the lack of English tuition at our meetings, I’m frowned upon, yet I am English, I have a very good education, I'm a commercial pilot, I can walk rings around his educators, it makes me sick, and its not just English, the whole lack of history that’s being taught is something else.

I knew professor of Chemistry (Professor Ollis) used to work for him until his death about 8 years ago nice chap he taught one of the princesses in Thailand and gave me a few Christmas cards he received off her and her husband who was a wing commander in the Thai airforce. My wife tells me they are now divorced. Im going to get them put in frames and hang them on the wall.

Bambina, English is a difficult language. This is a fact.

My native language is Spanish. Phonetically and grammatically driven. Children learn by sounds: pa pe pi po pu, la le li lo lu, ma me mi mo mu.....a vowel sound is always the same wherever it is....a phonetic language. Children learn how to read in 4-6 months...they read, even if they have no idea what they are reading, because they can read the sounds. Writing is almost automatic as one writes the sounds.

When I migrated to Australia, I was amazed to see that English is not learning by rules, but by memorization. They learn to read by memory, by reading books. They do not use rules to learn reading. They learn the words.

Well, I tell you this story because it appears to me that a process of learning a language like this is harder for an adult.

When I write in English I am using the same set of characters of my native language. But you Thai people not only have to learn a new language, but also a completely new set of character. So I found remarkable when a Thai person read and write English. It is a real academic achievement.

Do not give up…just keep reading and writing…everyday it will be better.

Below I sent you some verses to confuse you more…(to "challenge" your already proved capacity is a better way to put it)

The Funny English Language

We'll begin with a box and the plural is boxes.

But the plural of ox should be oxen, not oxes.

The one fowl is a goose but two are called geese,

Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.

You may found a lone mouse or a whole set of mice,

Yet the plural of house is houses not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,

Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?

If I speak of a foot and you show me your feet,

And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?

If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,

Why should not the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that and three would be those,

Yet hat in the plural wouldn't be hose.

And the plural of cat is cats and not cose.

We speak of a brother and also of brethren,

But though we say Mother, we never say Methren,

Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,

But imagine the feminine she, shis and shim,

So English, I fancy you will all agree,

Is the funniest language you ever did see.

Bambi, one thing that helps improve English (besides living with a farang :o ) is to read a book in English. Get some thriller, it doesn't matter if it isn't academic and read. If you enjoy the subject, you will enjoy reading. Your vocabulary, spelling and grammar will slowly improve as you absorb by reading.
