so it is possible to get a re-entry permit on a single entry tourist visa. that's good.

is the re-entry permit valid as long as the underlying visa is valid? or should i plan to get it some specific time before i leave and come back?

how does that effect the 'permitted to stay' date of that visa? (the date, if i have misused the term, until the underlying visa becomes useless and needs to be renewed). if i leave for 10 days is the permitted to stay date extended for 10 days or is that 10 days considered to have been used?

thanks for the help

The re-entry permit is valid until your current permitted to stay date. This is not the visa use by date (you already used that).

You lose. The re-entry permit only keeps your current permitted to stay date alive - when you return that date will be stamped in your passport for you new arrival permitted to stay.

As I understand it, you can get a re-entry permit on any visa.

A friend on a year-to-year extension of stay based on a non-B visa forgot to arrange the re-entry permit before going to Laos for a meeting last week. When he came back into Thailand yesterday he lost his extension and was given the 30-day visa exemption on arrival.

He is wondering if there is any way to get his one-year extension of stay (he had just renewed last month) back by paying a visit to immigration and paying a fine or somehow rectifying the situation. Has anyone ever heard of this?

That's happened a couple of times to friends of mine.  They, too, went to Suan Plu to plead their case, and lost.  They had to reapply for first a Non-O, or -B, then reapply for the one-year extension.

and the photo is a 6cm by 4 cm and if doing it at the airport you need to get it done before you go as there are no facilitie there

Negative, there is an Immigration re-entry permit facility at Suvarnabhumi Airport:

http://www.thaivisa.com/346.0.html

Re-entry permits can be obtained at Suvarnabhumi airport from the desks located in the area just before passport control. The desks are behind the glass screen so will not be visible from the check in hall. Please ensure you take 2" photos with you to the airport, as photo services are not available.

Re-entry permits can be applied for in person or by an agent at Thai Immigration, Soi Suan Phlu, Sathorn Tai, Bangkok. If an agent is used a letter of attorney is required.

The processing time at Thai Immigration Suan Pluh, can vary from 1 hours to half a day, so if you prefer to queue, apply before lunch so you you can pick it up later the same day

A pick up can be made by courier as long as the green receipt is produced.

Alternatively, if you are in Bangkok and have access to the internet, you can save time by filling out the TM-8 form and emailing it to [email protected] at least one day in advance. You must then attend the Immigration office at Suan Phlu and submit a 2" photo and the correct fee at counter 7

Please remember when arriving back into Thailand to note the re-entry permit number on the Immigration arrival card (TM-card), and check that you are stamped in correctly.

I've heard mention of a re-entry permit for (I believe) Bt.1,000 [good for one time use?] ....but I think there is also a multiple re-entry permit for Bt.1,700

I'm in a cloud as to terminology and nearly everything else regarding visa applications and renewals, etc.

I recently obtained a 3 month visa (not sure of technical name) at the imm office in Mae Sai. I didn't even have to do a border run. The official there told me to come back in 3 months in order to turn it in to a 1 year non-imm type O (which I call a retirement visa). I asked him if I could do a border run to go shopping, he said (correctly, it seems) that unless I got one of the two types of re-entry permits (mentioned in my 1st sentence above) that I would be back at square one, and have to start the visa process all over. Oddly, when I went to talk to border officials at the border itself, the message wasn't as clear - so I chose to follow the original advise of the imm official at the office, and didn't do a border crossing.

The oddest part is that that I can find no markings in my passport to indicate dates of these latest visa developments. In other words, there are no rubber stamps or scribblings or notations. Weird. Oh well, I'll just show up at the imm office before the 3 months is up - and hope that all goes well.

.....sure wish things were better defined and less miscombobulated (no offense to Bob).

FYI, the multiple re-entry permit is baht 3,800, so if you plan four outs & ins, you save money, fewer, best to just get a single re-entry.

However, BE SURE to get one when you get your one-year extension, will save lots of headaches if you happen to forget such on your next trip out.

1. He has lost his extension of stay and must start over - being here on a 30 day entry he needs to do it fast - first 2,000 baht to obtain a non immigrant visa and then another 1,900 baht for a new extension of stay. Don't forget re-entry permits prior to any travel.

2. There is no convenient photo facility, from a number of reports, at the new airport so if you plan to obtain a 1,000 baht single or 3,800 baht multi re-entry permit there be sure to have your 4x6 photos with you and arrive early enough to check-in and then obtain permit before your flight departs.

I asked my friend more about what went down at the airport when he arrived and lost his stay extension. He said he talked to two immigration officers about it and one said he knew of exceptions where a trip to the Chiang Mai immigration office resulted in getting the extension of stay restored. He said the other officer, who was younger, had never heard of such a case. In the end he called an immigration attorney in Bangkok on Sunday evening and the attorney says he may be able to do something on Wednesday at Suan Phlu. I'll try and find out what happens in the end and report back here. I'll be surprised if there's anything he can do.
