Need to use VPN (safe internetconnection)

Featured Replies

With the new censorship law (fake news law), I get a little worried to use social platforms and blogs etc.

I am not a computerexpert, and have not used VPN before, will the IP address be 100 % secured and unvissible to  people/administrations who want to find out more about me ?

Not because I want to write fake news, but I am worried how the lawmakers will define and use the new law.

I think it is natural as an expat, from the west, from another culture with free speech and a high level of transparency, to get surprised over what is going on, but I dont want to get in trouble because of that.

A VPN does only one thing: show a different IP address from where you actually reside.

It does however NOT change anything you already posted about yourself, I.e. place of living, previous posts etc.

If you are so concerned, you would need to start as well with a completely new and clean profile on each and every social media platform, mail system etc.

Expensive VPNs are better than cheap or free ones, especially when it  comes to not eating up too much of your bandwith. ExpressVpn and NordVpn have good reputations in that respect.

have been using ExpressVPN for the past 15 years, a little more expensive then some others but their coverage/service is worth the money

If you believe the tech reports, VPN in general is quite secure.    In my opinion it's a must if you travel and need to do any online banking on a hotel or airport Wifi network.    There are usually several protocols (or modes) that your VPN provider will likely allow you to set on your phone app or PC.... like the original OpenVPN, SSTP, PPTP, L2TP, IKE, etc.   While not a techie myself (and thus don't know exactly what's going on under the hood when you use the various modes), you may be inclined to read up on the various modes and their supposed varying levels of speed and security.

I've heard , and I don't know how true this is that they don't actually hide your activity, just deflect it a little.

Tor.  Free and safe.

Tor is great it's just painfully slow. It also can be a magnet for attention so I've heard.

Do bear in mind Tor uses Firefox. Jus sayin

In your opinion and possibly some writers but not everybody and not unless you take a lot of extra steps to harden it using about:config

So Tor certainly doesn't use Firefox.......

You can access Tor through, I think Firefox,  as well as definitely Brave and possibly other browsers.

Tor also has it's own browser.

I use expressvpn and it is very good.

I am currently streaming the F1 qualifying with an Austrian VPN on an Austrian website.

Very good streaming quality and no stuttering. (Red Bull offer free F1 streaming in Austria.)

I have only found two small 'issues' with expressvpn.

Cannot access Thai immigration websites with a VPN. I assume that is true for all VPN's

After a power cut, it does not connect automatically. I have to manually connect to the wifi and then good to go.

Neither of these are a big thing. It just takes a few seconds to fix.

Tor is built on Firefox

We are getting into semantics here which isn't helping anybody.

Tor is not the Tor browser.

Tor is garbage.  Most of the time it's frustratingly slow and laggy or completely non-responsive. Paying a pittance for a VPN is orders of magnitude better.  I would never recommend tor to anyone.

Does anyone go through trouble of using tor on a regular basis?

I have a VPN that comes with my server in Europe, I setup a tor router, cloudflare over TLS, and installed a few of the privacy based OS on a SBC as experiments, just in case I ever needed to use them one day, but are they really necessary that’s unless you are some kind of journalist, activist or terrorist.
