BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand is to export 44,000 tons of rice to Iraq; the first such delivery in seven years. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha expressed his readiness to support Thai exporters in dealing with the global market.

Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri, said today that Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha had been informed of preparations for the export of 44,000 tons of Thai rice to Iraq, seen as restoring confidence in Thai rice in the Iraqi market.

He went on to say that the government is ready to support the private sector and Thai exporters in establishing Thai rice markets in new countries in addition to the three main markets, namely the premium market, the general market and the niche market. This will also benefit Thai rice farmers.

The forty-four thousand tons of 100-percent Thai white rice, which will be exported in mid-August, is the first consignment of Thai rice to be exported to the Iraqi market in seven years, after Iraq suspended rice imports from Thailand. It is expected that Thai exporters will be able to continue exporting Thai rice to Iraq.

The Thai government is also ready to support Thai exporters consistently in marketing Thai agricultural products in Asia, the Middle East and other regions.

Gen. Prayut has also instructed the Ministry of Commerce to accelerate the promotion of Thai rice and agricultural products to increase market share in the global market to replace the domestic demand for consumption that has slowed down, due to the economic and the COVID-19 crises.
