PHUKET (NNT) - Phuket province is preparing to close the Phuket Fishing Port of the Fish Marketing Organization (FMO) temporarily for COVID-19 containment, after 95 trawler crew members were found to have the disease.

Provincial public health office chief Dr. Koosak Kookiattikul said these crew members are asymptomatic and healthy. Their infections were detected over the past few weeks and most preferred to quarantine on their trawlers, rather than go to a field hospital. The elderly and people who suffer with chronic diseases will be taken to hospital.

According to Dr. Koosak, the Delta variant of COVID-19 is now dominant in the province, resulting in a spike in infections, compared with figures resulting from mass testing conducted last month.

Meanwhile, Phuket Fishery Association president Somyot Wongboonyakul said they have agreed that a major COVID-19 cluster is believed to have developed at the Phuket Fishing port. The association consulted the provincial Fisheries Office about suspending port operations for 14 days, to isolate the infected and put at-risk people in quarantine on their trawlers.
