Authorities crackdown on ‘Grape Rice Wine’ suspected to be behind death of 3 teenage girls in Phnom Penh

Featured Replies

After the tragic death of 3 young women in Phnom Penh on Thursday from alcohol poisoning, authorities have banned the sale, distribution and production of the wine which is suspected to be behind their deaths. Thlai Davy, 18, Prouch Molika, 18 and Phay Dany, 17, died after they drunk 11 bottles of a local wine named “Meas Hong” and mixed it when Cola-Cola.

Authorities tested the wine for the presence of methanol – a substance which is used to boost alcohol content in wine and can be fatal for human consumption. Analysis results from bottle taken from the scene showed that three out of the five tested showed a methanol content of 1.3% to 8.8% above the allowable level of 0.15% – which is 13 to 88 times above the permitted level.

After receiving the analysis results on September 3, 2021, officials of the General Department of KP inspected the factory of the manufacturer – Meas Hong Gold Processing, located in Sangkat Boeung Keng Kang 3, Khan Boeung Keng Kang, Phnom Penh.
