Hi looking for some advice guidence, my wife (Thai) will be giving birth soon and I'm not sure of the process for registering the childs birth certificate. The child will be born in Qatar but I dont know if I should register the child as Thai so that he/she will be eligible for a Thai passport and then am I able to apply for a UK passport (Duel passports)?

UK passport only (can he/she apply for a Thai passport if he/she already holds a UK passport?)

Thai passport only (I was told if the child already holds a UK passport then he/she would not be able to hold a Thai passport?

Any advice would be appreciated I'm sure other people have had this experience.

Two passports no problem - My son was born outside of the UK and got a British passport from the Embassy. Many years later we got his Thai passport at the Thai Consulate. When coming into & leaving Thailand use Thai. In UK use UK.

After the birth, I presume you will get a birth certificate issued by a Qatar authority. Take this birth certificate to the Thai embassy in Qatar to register the birth at the embassy and get a corresponding document from the embassy.

Apply for the child’s Thai passport at the Thai embassy in Qatar, for the UK passport at the British embassy in Qatar.

Later when travelling to Thailand, for the child always use the Thai passport to enter and leave Thailand.

When in Thailand with the child, get the child onto the house registration book of your wife or of a member of her family. Useful for the child to get the Thai ID card later, when grown up.

In which case he should either be around for a couple of years to do cadets while at high school and university, effectively exempting him from the lottery. Or simply not register himself on the house registry he is 30. Move back here when he is past 30 and he effectively doesn't have to serve, as even if you are conscripted, your age means that you are plonked into a non active reserve force.

old law and common misconception unfortunately.

Law was changed circa 1992 which has done away with that.
