The Phnom Penh Municipal Court has dropped arrest warrants and charges against former youth president of the ex-Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) and nine other former members following intervention from Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Fresh News quoted a court spokesman as saying yesterday that the warrants, on charges of plotting and incitement to cause public chaos, against South Korea-based Yim Sinorn and his accomplices were issued in November 2019. On Wednesday, Mr Hun Sen received a request letter from the 10 ex-CNRP members to intervene to drop the charges and he tasked Minister of Justice Keut Rith to seek justice for them.

Sinorn noted in his letter that the premier has recently intervened to drop charges against a political analyst and professor Seng Sary, which was a wise move supported by the national and international public. He wrote that he and other former members had led a nonviolent demonstration. However, they did not support the planned return of former opposition leader Sam Rainsy on November 9, 2019.
