Daily News made much of the first press conference of the new chief of the Police Bureau of Narcotics who announced the resolution of two cases.

They said he was off to a quick start.

But the five men and women arrested were just hapless mules delivering drugs to Bangkok from up country.

The "investors" behind the drugs remain at large.

Still it gave Lt-Gen Sarayuth Sanguanphokhai a chance to appear with his subordinates and be photographed with more than 4 million Ya Ba, 130 kilos of "ice", two kilos of ketamine and some high powered guns and lots of ammunition.

The first case was an Akha tribesman called Thawee, 45, arrested in Chiang Rai in a pick-up who was travelling towards Bangkok and surrounding provinces.

The second was the arrest of four people - Jakraphat,42, Noppakhun, 36, both from Nong Khai and Pramuk,28, and Ms. Phannida,25, from Songkhla.

They were paid to transport 130 kilos of crystal meth and nearly half a million Ya Ba (meth amphetamine mixed with caffeine) from Bung Kan to the central region.

They were arrested in three pick-ups at the Wang Noi Muang Mai market in Ayutthaya.

They said they were handed 100,000 baht for the delivery and had done it twice before successfully.

Also taken into evidence were an AK-47, an M4 and a shotgun.

Lt-Gen Sarayuth took the opportunity to say that the war on drugs continues.

ASEAN NOW notes that Thailand's prison population - perhaps as much as 80% of it - is full of drug mules and users.

Very few are big players in the drugs business.

He must be as pleased as punch to be made the new chief of drugs. He is probably busy planning how he will house all of his luxury cars, planning how he will control and distribute and rubbing his hands gleefully all the way to the bank ????????????
