Johpa
IMHO Ban Rak, Monkey Club and Warm Up all cater to the teeny brigade and should be avoided at all costs! Tried all these venues the other night with another (old git) mate of mine. They wouldn't have anything to do with us. They are all "too cool for school" not really for the zimmer frame set. So we ended up in Spotlight. :D Depends on your age, a farang over 30 has basically no chance there. I love em, I go with my friends all the time. The lounge at Warm up is my favorite spot. Might as well have fun there until I am considered too old and weird haha. Sounds like my kind of places. Being over 50 and not looking for any "chances", all I want is to share some drinks with some mates and admire attractive young women, something I have not seen sitting outside the Spotlight in decades. Alas, the music at such modern establishments in town usually sends me out the door well before even my bedtime. I really do miss my favorite cantina, now closed, up in Mae Rim, bedecked with Christmas lights and staffed by young Thai women wearing high boots, fishnet stockings, and short skirts who would take turns on the stage crooning Thai folk songs. Just remember, and don't laugh, but those of us too old and too weird like to have a little bit of fun too.
Crow Boy
Well, yeah, only joking, have to be in bed by 10.30........PM I always say if you aren't in bed by 10:30pm it's time to go home No chance sceadadoodle.. You will be coming to the BBQ, and you will not be going to bed at 10.30 pm.. Even if Crowy and myself have set up an IV drip of red bull into your arm.. Better is a Raging Bull - disolve a viagra in the Red Bull. Avoid if suffering from a heart condition. CB

MyPenRye
I like dancing sporadically, but I find that there are only 2 places I know where you can actually dance: Spicy and Bubbles, although I find the beat and the style of music too repetitive, the smoking (just as Spicy) criminal, and the DJs' interjections really bothersome. I don't go to Spicy anymore for the smoking and the obvious fasle pretenses. Are there any other places where one can actually dance. I have never been to Mandalay, Dragon, and Ban Rak. Fashion (I thought it had a different name ... behind Kad Suan Kaew) used to have a techno room, but few people went in there and danced, so they canned it. The techno was a bit much after a while, but it was a change from the hip-hop. And, most of those places are too loud. Mind you, if I keep going there, I will soon be deaf! PS: Not sure if anyone has bothered going to the 2nd flloor of the Chiang Mai Lotus (I think that's the one or the one behind that one). The dance floor is huge, no smoking, the band sings in English, the music is varied (Latin, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's) and not too loud. The only downside is the room has not style, very few people know about it, and the food is not that great. It is too bad. Actually, the lounge at one of those 2 places has English speaking singers usually. It is a shame that people do not go there more often. Maybe we can organize a bunch of people to go there, once I get to CM (about one month).
sabaijai
Another one to consider, for dancing anyway, is the monthly DJ party at D2hotel's Mix Bar. Different DJ every month, 9pm-midnight. I haven't been yet, next one is on 30 June. Speaking of monthly events, Chiang Mai's own The Tonic Rays are performing at Khan-Asa, one night only, Wed 20 June. I'll be catching them tonight, 6/14, at Guitarman on Loi Kroh just before the iron bridge. They go on at 10:30. Goood group, and nice venue. Just went 1st time last week. PeaceBlondie
I really should get out more, but I can't imagine myself getting stinkin' drunk in a smoky room, dancing to music of which I've never heard, to decibels that pierce your eardrums, crowded among drunk, stinking patrons, and having to ride myself home on the CBR. I don't want to go somewhere that I'm a pariah for being a sober non-smoker, but it would be cool to sit around with folks who can actually carry on a conversation indoors. None of these venues sound appealing, and you know I'm not going there to score with the chicks. Any suggestions?

You can go and not get stinking drunk .... and can count on most patrons not stinking but when you are in BKK ... try @Richards .. they do allow smoking inside but it isn't too bad ... and the volume of the music is low enough to enjoy conversations Edited June 15, 2007 by jdinasia
