Blackburn man 'murdered' in Thailand

By David Watkinson

An East Lancashire man has been murdered after he was mown down by his girlfriend on a road in Thailand, say police.

Michael Butcher, from Blackburn, was going to work on his motorbike when her car hit him, they said. Thai police have now charged her.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Hunter, of Lancashire Police, said that the 58-year-old had moved to Thailand from East Lancashire to be a teacher and to live with his new partner.

But they said his dream new life turned to tragedy when he died in the road crash. Mr Butcher's girl friend's name has not been revealed to the British authorities and she is currently awaiting trial.

Mr Hunter said that Mr Butcher was on his way to work in the Kamphaeng Phet district of Thailand in the north of the country at the time of the incident. He said his bike was believed to have been forced off the road, early on February 15 this year.

He died at the scene as a result of multiple injuries.

Mr Hunter said his girlfriend was arrested shortly after and has now been charged with murder.

Because Mr Butcher is a British national, a post mortem examination has been carried out in this country and an inquest will take place in Blackburn.

East Lancashire coroner Michael Singleton said he would delay holding an inquest until Thai police inquiries and court proceedings had been completed.

Mr Hunter said Mr Butcher lived in Blackburn and only moved out to Thailand within the last 12 months.

He said that he had left the area to start a new life after his marriage broke down.

Mr Hunter said: "Because Mr Butcher is a British national the case has been referred to the authorities in this country but it is a Thai investigation."

Coroner's officer PC Lynn Farnsworth said: "Mr Roberts was on his way to work on his motorbike when he was struck by a motor vehicle.

"He died as a result of his injuries at the scene."

Mr Butcher's family in Blackburn declined to comment.

Makes you wonder what made her do it .

Jealous.

This happened just down the road from us. The poor guy was riding his chopper southbound headed to the school behind our house and his female partner was driving a van northbound. When she saw him she crossed the center divider and hit him pretty much head on at the shoulder of the road.

Her story to the local police was she was just trying to get him to stop so she could talk to him.

RIP. Glad to hear she's in jail.

I am a bit confused - who is Mr Roberts? The man who died was Michael Butcher but "Coroner's officer PC Lynn Farnsworth said: "Mr Roberts was on his way to work on his motorbike when he was struck by a motor vehicle."

Saw that too; likely a typing error from the journalist.

OMG! so, it wasn't premeditated & she wasn't following him, or anything? If he'd been 2 mins earlier or later, she wouldn't have seen him & he'd still be alive? How sad. And scary.

My condolences to his family.

To be valued more alive then dead, you must keep handing over money , and in geometrical progression. That will lead you broke soon, and then you will be worth more dead then alive.

I guess the only possible defense is never marry a Thai ,and if you did that mistake already, consider cutting losses and board the first plane with what you have left.

After all it might be the recent visa shake up was not an anti-farang thing, but a gesture of pity from Immigration :o

I think you mean never marry a money-hungry Thai. And if you think that ALL Thais that you could possibly marry are essentially sly money-grabbing sloths, you are seriously jaded and wrong. Plenty of decent women to marry who are not materialistic, from manager to farmgirl. It's all about having decent judgement and making a choice.

With the Brit in Hua Hin the other week this makes 11 since Jan 2005 murdered in Thailand I think (official figures) - must be the highest outside the UK

Or does anyone know different?

I'd hazard a guess and say maybe South Africa the murder capital of the world could possibly top Thailand for murdered Britons.

Also Pakistan and India - people with British passports anyway :o

I could go with Pakistan but I really do not know - would be interesting to find out.

The reason I say 9 is because I think the South Shields guy in Hua Hin was number 10 in the news story.

Somrak Wiskrom

Murder trial to begin next year

A former Fylde restaurateur must wait another year before she faces trial for murder. Somrak Wiskrom, the ex-manager of the Sawatdee Thai restaurant in Wrea Green, is accused of killing boyfriend Michael Butcher in the Khampaeng Phet district of Thailand.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said the trial will now begin on October 28 next year. They also confirmed Wiskrom will remain on bail in Thailand while she awaits her hearing.

Mr Butcher, 58, from Blackburn, died on February 15. Police in Thailand believe he may have been run over. He died at the scene as a result of multiple injuries.

Wiskrom, who is in her early 30s, was arrested. Thai police formally charged her with murder in July.

Her son is believed to have returned to Lancaster to be with his father. Wiskrom, who also lived in Bispham when she was known as Somrak Thompson, was popular at the Sawatdee.

After four years in Wrea Green, Wiskrom opened the Som Siam Thai restaurant in Meeting House Lane, Lancaster. She stayed for more than five years before returning to Thailand.

East Lancashire coroner Michael Singleton said he would delay holding a full inquest until court proceedings had been completed.

Mr Butcher lived in Blackburn, but is believed to have moved to Thailand within the last 12 months to start a new life.

From observing a lot of mia falang / pua falang type couples, often times (and I'm certainly not drawing any conclusions here):

He/she was rude... but not by their own cultural standards and he/she was oversensitive ...but again not by the other's cultural standards. Like back home stateside, you can insult your friend's mothers all through childhood in good fun with the worst case scenario being a serious shoving match and maybe a few punches thrown, but then you do it in the wrong ethnic neighborhood and you might get shot.

Attention to everyone!

This evil woman hasn't spent even one single day in jail and she is as free as a bird. Possibly she might have manipulated the case process somehow. And nowadays she keeps giving harm to people because she actually doesn't care any of human life! People can PM me for any advice, suggestion or help. Justice for all!!
