Guardian expresses regrets for publishing false news about PM

Elisabeth Ribbans, readers’ editor of the UK based newspaper The Guardian, sent a letter to Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Koy Kuong to express her regrets at publishing false information concerning Prime Minister Hun Sen having dual nationalities. “It is hoped the prompt action to rectify this error provides a satisfactory resolution,” wrote Elisabeth in her letter, issued yesterday.

 

She also said that she was notified about the error by the Guardian’s editorial staff and the article was amended accordingly. “You can see the updated version of the article in which the reference to Prime Minister Hun Sen appeared here,” added Elisabeth.

 

On October 3, The Guardian published an article entitled “Law firm founded by Cypriot president accused of hiding assets of Russian exile”, and in the article, the newspaper wrote that Prime Minister Hun Sen was among people who have purchased passports from Cyprus. In response to this article, lawyers from the Cambodian government issued a statement denying this news by saying that the news is untrue, baseless, and misleading.
