The MiL is coming to live with us in a couple of weeks (a topic by itself right there, sure, but it is what it is). She's generally a low maintenance lady, as such things go, but tv is a must. Not very selective or discerning, so long as it's in Thai or Chinese - news, talks shows, entertainment shows, game shows, drama or the shopping channel, nature and cooking programs. Anything goes.

At her house, she's got one of the "satellite" dishes, which cannot be installed in our place (roof configuration) without putting up a dedicated pole in the garden. We're looking for some other service/connection, preferably not involving much drilling in walls, roof or ceiling.

We have a fine fiber internet connection from true, solid wi-fi too. Hoping for something that could utilize the latter, but without the MiL having to learn how to operate a smartphone, navigate the internet and so forth.

We've been offered no-name android boxes at inflated prices, without a clear explanation if they'll fit the bill. Not much enlightenment from True sales reps as well.

Any advice which could clue us in would be appreciated.

At a lower priority, we'll be looking into getting something similar for us, but preferably with more varied content and less operating constraints, but that's maybe for a different topic.

I have an android box (not for sale) and it works very well  I bought it so that I could watch F1 in Thailand but as I haven't been able to visit, its here in the UK with me now and still working fine.  It came pre-loaded with movie channels (English with Thai subtitles) - lots of other TV and movie packages and most of the Thai TV channels.

Its very easy to use - just switch on and 2 or 3 clicks gets you to where you want.

With the movies, you are sometimes offered a choice of streams - some of which either don't work or are a different movie altogether.  However, the wife brought it with her when she visited the UK and we managed to watch movies, many from this year, every night for 10 weeks.

The Thai TV options don't have that problem as there's no choice of streams - it goes straight to them. There was one evening when none of the Thai channels would work but it was fine an hour later.

Overall far better than a similar box I had in the UK. I'm no techie but I believe that with these boxes, it depends on who sets them up. The guy who supplied it said it needed a 100mb connection but I only have 10mb in the UK and its fine.  I also seem to remember him saying that he'll put what you want on it  - providing its available.

PM me and I'll give you his number.

What's wrong with the terrestrial digital TV service.

Just needs a small aerial pointed at the nearest tower.

Nothing wrong with that, probably - just that we're trying for a solution that does not involve installing anything on the roof, outdoor ceiling, walls (or requires a pole). Dealing with some leakage issues from roof as it is, so weary of poking extra holes. Previous abodes had all kind of wildlife in the attic, so any thing serving as a stairway for critters is frowned upon by the Mrs.
