Seems as though it's the norm and completed acceptable (kind of a rite of passage) for a western guy to get involved with a thai girl at least once. After all there is a huge sex industry tailor made for the farang male. However this is not the case for western women in thailand (not that I'm asking for that). From the conversations I've had with guys, it's frowned upon for a farang girl to behave the way the farang males do in thailand. Don't mean to start a gender war, but it appears there's a double standard - it's not good for the goose but it's great for the gander

If you mean the Thais are frowning then I think you will find they frown on the way male falangs behave here.

Sexual encounters are quite acceptable but the Thais do not walk around in public with bargirls.

Dare I suggest it, but is that situation so much different than in the west ? I don't think so.

I know that if a farang girl has a lot of boyfreinds here in LOS, especially in a small place, they tend to get a reputation which may cause thai guys to not approach her & I haven't seen this happen to the guys. So yes, to a degree there is a double standard but as the DR pointed out, this double standard also applies at home. Here in samui, I have been  seen on the motorbike with a male thai freind, and am asked by other thais, male or female,if I have a new boyfreind. Not sure if this is double standard or just sheer nosyness!

throughout the world it is still not very much accepted a woman having many men, especially for fun. I cannot see that this is worse here in Thailand. what I don't like that many men (especially the ones who come here because of the cheap and easy sex) don't want to believe that I am not here because of the same thing!!

or: they don't want to see us farang women here! it happened to me that a man from my home country asked me in a bar in Phuket (where i was the only single farang girl) what I wanted there. he got really rude, and that after he bought me a drink still sitting on the other side of the bar. (maybe he was shy talking to a farang woman?)

but to be fair, I have lots of farang man-friends here in LOS and they are really cool guys :laugh:

The other side of the coin. Not all farang men in LOS are here for the cheap sex. Most on this forum would not be here for it, and I probably accept though that many partake of it. Unfortunatly, this leads to those that are not, being "tarred with the same brush".

How many strange looks from Thai women and sniggers from western tourists do I get as I walk along the street with my Thai wife?

I can not imagine how that makes my wife feel knowing that most Thais and practically every farang thinks she is an ex-hooker!

I think Wolf is right regarding the Western male in Thailand.  My husband feel uncomfortable as well.  

I have been treated rudely in Thailand by some Thais who assume I am a bar girl (although I look nothing like the stereotype they have).  My husband was quite upset with that and I had to try to keep the peace.

I got annoyed when people assume he's a sex tourist all the time.  Loads of pimps come up to him and offer to take him to brothels and stuff while I was walking right beside him!  Even here in England, when he said he's going to Thailand for a holiday, people automatically smirk and sarcastically said 'interesting'.   ???

Regarding the double standard I think it's like that the world over really.

It's quite sad that a thai female with a farang is automatically assumed to be an ex-hooker. A thai female friend of mine is married to an english bloke and now resides in the UK. She escaped exactly what you've described to confront it in London. She is amazingly beautiful, therefore attracts quite a bit of attention, but when she mentions she's thai she gets the sly remarks, funny looks and winks. This reaction is generally from the hetro males - guess it may be an indication of what they get up to in thailand.  ??? Due to this she feels uncomfortable and out of place. The only friends she has are gay who admire and respect her for the person she is.

I don't know about London though.  I have been living in London for quite a while now without any incident although I got lots of it in Thailand.  Maybe it's just my luck but most people I met here are all right.  

It's when some of them are among their male friends and are joking around with their mates that they say silly things like that (like the nudge nudge wink wink attitude when my hubby say he's going to Thailand).  I think my hubby suffer more than me!

I have to say it is more of a problem when I am in Thailand.  It's pretty sad really since it is my home country.  

well actually, not all the people assume thai ladies with farang consider as a ex-hooker but, it seem it all happens co'z of the reflection of other thai females come from North East of Thailand especially. I felt sorry about  it co'z I had lot of thai friends and it will reflect for all them.    ???
