Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has given the greenlight to the state and private sectors to hold this year’s Loy Krathong festival, provided that there are adequate health safety measures, under the COVID-free setting and universal prevention programmes, in place.

 

Ms. Rachada Dhnadirek, deputy spokesperson forGovernment House, said today (Saturday) that rules have been set, with which organisers of the festival at each venue must strictly comply.

 

These include a ban on fireworks, flying lanterns, flares and firecrackers and celebrants should refrain from drinking. Officials must check public transport, such as boats and buses,to make sure they are safe for commuters during the festival.

drinking??? what??? water, soda, coffee or tea??? a ban on gatherings.... how will they do miss Loy Kratong and all the shows ??? No drinking, no gathering??? no fireworks .......Happiness to the people 

A ban on fireworks! Covid 19 is being used to impose a joyless, puritanical life on everyone. The other agents of the new age of puritanical oppression are the eco activists who work hand in hand with authoritarian bullies.

The most miserable and unintelligent man in Thailand tells people, no drinking, no partying, no gambling but you can break the rules of no gatherings because I can't remember what I said yesterday.

For crying out loud, the man makes Oliver Cromwell look like a free love hippy!

These guys are great at appearing to give the people something then making sure they can not enjoy it. Makes as much sense as no popcorn while watching a movie

but lanterns and fireworks are very part of loy krathong, especially in the north, chiang mai, sukhothai.

they shoot rubber bullets, canisters of tear gas and water cannons lased with burning chemicals every single night just for protesting the government, but people can't have one evening of fun and jolly

hopefully we dont see the next big covid breakout after this with so many people intermingling and many ignoring any safety measures, think we will be sitting this one out this year

Waaaait a minute! I thought there was a certain announcement in the Royal Gazette just a couple of days ago. Ah, there it is...

 

One of the simple pleasures of living here in Northern Thailand was the excitement felt by my daughter when she was a child at festivals like (in particular,) Loi Kratong. She is a teenager now, and perhaps past such things, but for the last few years I have still enjoyed going to my local "venue", sipping a cold beer and watching; enjoying the excitement and the oohs and ahs at the fireworks, and the looks of solemn  enchantment on the children's (and sometimes adults) faces as they floated their kratongs and launched their lanterns.

 

This bunch of swaggering comic-opera buffoons, with their small handed addiction to grandiose uniforms, and their mendacious announcements clearly intended to reduce the population to feudal servility, to a degree of medieval misery that even a Monty Python satire would struggle to capture, seem hell bent on destroying the freewheeling gentle lifestyle which was so much part of the attractions, to me and I suspect many others, tourists and expatriates alike.

 

The only saving grace, I suppose, is that quite probably, as has already been suggested, most people will just ignore their instructions.

And dont forget the Mandatory Ban on gatherings of more than 500 people that was announced 10 Days ago.

I was told yesterday that Nakhon pathoms phra pathom chedi temple [ampur mueang] has cancelled it's Loy Krathong festive and the 10 day market that's held within the temple grounds.

However people are free to "float Krathongs" in the evening to celebrate the day

Loy Krathong is certainly one of our family's favourite festivals. But it's always a scrum. Stupid to encourage it this year. Wait for way more vaccinations. We won't be going--bummer!

The loy kratong festival I attended all the Kratongs were biodegradable. You are out of touch

This is one night of the year the teenagers in our village love to dress up to the nines, and promenade around to show how 'mature' they now are LOL.

Loy Grathong is not about drinking or flying lanterns, you're not in Drumnadrochit now, Toto, and it's not Guy Fawkes night. 

Loi Kaboom , about 5 years ago where I live going through an area between 2 buildings some brats were throwing fireworks , the noise was so intense I think I have a burst eardrum .  My wife still makes a krathong and it goes in a stream through the rice fields.  Next day the klong where the streams meet is blocked by plastic ones.  Very sad.
