The Prime Minister’s instruction to grow coriander, or Chinese parsley, on military farmland to cope with the soaring prices is well-intended, the government spokesman said Friday, in response to online criticism.

Due to floods, prices of agricultural products have soared. One such case is coriander, for which prices have risen to 300-400 baht per kilogramme recently.

Thailand’s premier Prayut Chan-ocha was concerned and gave a directive to plant coriander in the military land, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Chalermchai Sri-on said on Thursday.

Probably fleecing incoming foreigners and forcing them to buy silly insurance not enough to fill his government's empty coffers... so growing Coriander at 300 baht a kg in the market seems a good supplement...

I remember not too long ago coriander shot up to 240 per kg. Extended family thought they would get on the band wagon, paid for a tractor to plough the land and then paid labour to put in 5 Rai of Coriander.  By the time it was ready for picking the price had dropped back to pre price hike. and the whole exercise had actually cost them money.

Imagine this creep actually doing something to benefit the people? Who are his PR people? Not very creative. Cilantro. Bah humbug.

Oh well, win some, lose some.

The new coriander Czar, what next for the amazing dullard.

Many young men conscripted into the Thai army serve their time by doing menial chores as servants for the

officers . At least two ex army prime ministers have permanent rent free homes within army compounds.

I suppose the young men will now be growing coriander and the income from the sale  will go to who ???

"benefit the people"?

It's "military farmland" which implies owned by the military. As such it is the military which often seems to act as a sovereign entity in its own right that benefits first.

What's next - government subsidies for the military to make produce from its farmland?

I didn't know he had one of those!

Do not understand how anyone can like this herb, they could use it as a form of torture.

Coriander should be banned or priced out of reach! Bloody awful stuff, tastes like vomit, I don't know how anybody can eat it and pretend they actually like it!

- "So what are you guys doing when you are not valiantly defending the country against all those enemies that surround you?"

- "Oh, we are growing coriander."

With the price of Spring Onions now between 400-500 Baht / kg, why not grow some of them.

The Flowers could be ripped out of the Borders at Gov,t House and the Onions planted in there pace.

As María Antuanet said when informed that the peasants did not have bread ,

" Let them eat Coriander"   LOL

What a bunch of clowns.

I don't begrudge them for doing it. But why publicize it? did they think it would win him favor with the masses?

That was for 25 grams ????

Does coriander look like this?

A friend thinks that someone is using his land to plant coriander.

Asking for a friend.

Sure they will be better off farming than if they had to go to war. These “ladyboys” aren’t really war-material…

additional information

I would of thought all spare government land would be occupied by rare tropical plants that are fetching very high prices .

Waiting for my order of seeds to arrive to get into business .

Normal Thai critical thinking, not unlike opening a coffee shop on every corner because the first one was doing good business... ????
