ubonjoe
That was asked about many times when the forum software was changed some time ago. But it was never resolved. Apparently that function could not be brought back.
Maestro
The problem with with the post numbers shown for every post in a topic was that when a post needed to be deleted for one reason or another, the numbers of all posts following the deleted post changed automatically. For example, this post of mine would be #4 with the previous software version. Let us assume that after another five more posts are made, my post gets deleted. Automatically, the posts that were numbered from #5 to #9 are now numbered from #4 to #8. A reference made to post #4 made in a subsequent post before the deletion of that post will, after the deletion, bring you to what originally was post #5 and as you can imagine, this creates quite a problem. Therefore, with the old system of post numbering, it was preferable to refer to an individual post with the direct link to that post. This possibility of direct linking continues to exist in with the current software. If you want to give a link to metisdead's post above, you click on the button with the tree horizonal dots at the top right of his post and a small context-sensitive menu opens. Click on "Share" and you get this: Triple-click on the link shown in the small pop-up window to highlight it, then copy-paste it into your post at the place where you want to give a reference to Metisdead's post.
