The Ministry of Environment said yesterday that the “plastic-for-rice exchange programme”, which is run by the Tampaing Snong Russey Foundation, has reduced pollution by about 100 tonnes of plastic each year, and prevented damage to the ecosystem of the Tonle Sap Lake.

Ministry of Environment spokesman Neth Pheaktra said through the programme, the people in the communities around the lake have reduced the pollution of the Tonle Sap Lake by plastic, contributed to the protection of the environment, and participated in the protection of biodiversity in the lake, the largest in Southeast Asia.

“Each year, the programme has reduced the amount of plastic waste being added to the lake by about 100 tonnes, both wet and dry,” he added. Pheaktra said that the programme was launched in 2018 in many communities around the Tonle Sap lake area to educate people about the impact of plastic waste and to teach them how to properly dispose of them, rather than burning or throwing them into the lake.
